Give the Big 3 a break, Take 1

Hybrid cars aren't saving Toyota's sales numbers.Even Honda is getting hammered?

Both Toyota and Honda posted sales declines of over 30 percent in November compared to last year. While that wasn't as bad as GM or Chrysler, those numbers were roughly in line with Ford's numbers.

And, for those buying cars, would you buy a car from a company that was weeks away from bankruptcy without government help? I wouldn't.

Does that justify Detroit's years of SUV madness at the expense of a balanced product portfolio? Of course not, but all of these automakers had started making serious changes before the credit crisis - a crisis that is hurting all automakers, even those making hybrid cars and small cars.

This alone doesn't justify a bailout, but it adds a little perspective. More coming on Take 2.

We have to look at "the big picture." The days of tunnel vision are over. Our nation better wake up and smell the coffee. With all our bail outs along with the 168 billion economic stimulus package, that btw did nothing for our economy it is hard to understand why our government can't see the need to bail us out of our dependence on foreign oil. The high cost of fuel this past year seriously damaged our economy and society. Why don't we invest in America's Energy Independence. It would cost the equivalent of 60 cents per gallon to charge and drive an electric car. The electricity to charge the car can conceivably come from wind or solar . We need to get on about the business of harnessing these sources of energy. Create clean cheap energy, badly needed new green collar jobs and reduce our dependence on foreign oil. What more of a win-win situation could there be? Instead of spending billions upon billions on bailouts, why don't we instead invest in renewable energy. We have GUARANTEED returns if we do this. I just read a fascinating book by Jeff Wilson called The Manhattan Project of 2009 Energy Independence NOW .This book Is the big picture

Why not throw the big 3 a softball while they get it together -- give each a contract to replace all the rolling stock of the Army and the Marines, and the National Guard/Reserves. Most of it is in Iraq anyway, and it's pretty badly beat up.

Even they couldn't screw that up (and if they did you charge 'em with treason or profiteering...)

Could this keep enough factories open while they retool for the future?

I'm going with that idea somebody else had: let the oil companies bailout the Kinda Big Three.
