Fusion hybrid punks Camry hybrid in the city

Can Ford catch Toyota on hybrid cars?Hybrid wars are on?

Ford's new hybrid, the Fusion hybrid, will beat the Toyota Camry hybrid in city fuel economy by 8 mpg according to the latest EPA findings. In the city, the Fusion hybrid will be rated at 41 mpg, 8 mpg more than the Camry hybrid. On the highway, the Camry hybrid will be rated 36 mpg, 2 mpg more than the Camry hybrid.

While this is fantastic and exciting news, I'm still uncertain that Ford is truly ready to challenge Toyota's supremacy in hybrid cars.

Even before the bottom fell out of hybrid sales last month, Ford still only planned on producing 25,000 Fusion hybrids next year. Why? This is a car that should outsell the Camry hybrid. Is Ford's new hybrid technology cost-competitive compared to Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive?

Still, whether by luck or not, 25,000 Fusion hybrids per year might be the right number until gas prices pick back up. For now, the Fusion hybrid is a hopeful development for the US auto industry.

Pretty cool, though slightly more expensive than Toyota.

The hybrid cars are a very good means of alternate transport. They are very well economic. I also noticed a hybrid car from Mitsuibishi, the iMiev that gives a huge breakthrough.

It also has some pictures and videos of the new hybrid

And it's not bad looking for a Ford. Overall, I'm pretty impressed.

Yes, I think Ford is good. I also hope it'll compete with Toyota and Honda for better hybrid prices!

Regardless if its a hybrid or a regular gas guzzler,Ford means Fix or Repair daily. I have not driven or owned a ford in 40 years. Thank you japan for selling us quality vehicles.

BYD still has them both beat by a long shot.

I'm speechless that Ford thinks it can sell this for so much more than Camry Hybrid. Man up, and take a huge loss per car to get a piece of the market, like Toyota, Ford!

Anonymous, Check your facts and you'll find that Consumers and J.D. Power both rank Ford's quality and reliability as good or better than Honda and Toyota.

I'm not sure how you can say BYD has them both beat. They have yet to make a car that could legally - via safety requirements - be sold in the US.

I think JD Powers must have their data wrong or subsidized by Ford. No way a Fusion is better than a Camry Hybrid and gets better mileage unless the gas tank is bigger.

As an owner of a Camry hybrid I feel your angst.

Still, this is based off the EPA's city cycle which is not very reliable for predicting real world city fuel economy. Nonetheless, the results are accurate using this overly-simplistic methodology.

Toyota's third generation HSD that will soon launch in the new Prius uses a smaller, lighter battery. So, if Toyota was adding the third gen HSD to the Camry hybrid, fuel economy would be increased.

Couple that with the Fusion hybrid's higher price and the increase isn't quite as significant.

Likewise, there is still some question about the long term reliability of Ford's batteries. That's not to say they won't last the life of the vehicle, however, over time some degradation in fuel economy is possible if Ford is more aggressively cycling their battery than Toyota.
