China launches plug-in hybrid, but not ready for America

China beating the rest of the world to plug-in hybrid vehicles?Watch out world?

Chinese battery and automaker BYD has launched the F3DM, the first hybrid vehicle made in China by a Chinese company. The F3DM can travel up to 62 miles on electricity before tapping into it's gasoline engine, and can be fully charged in 9 hours from a regular electric outlet.

Still, while BYD is claiming to have beat the rest of the world to plug-in hybrids, the vehicle is not up to US safety standards according to reports.

It is easier to ship things in China because they don't have such strict standards and such a bunch of personal injury lawyers :-)

A., please, read carefully. I don't say it's better to ship things in China. I only saying that it is easier.
As to the crap produced by China, it is mostly invested and cared by multinational corporations, mostly American. So, blame them first :-)

What an incredible accomplishment from out of the blue. BYD just handed GM and Toyota their asses.

Again, this Chinese vehicle wouldn't pass US safety standards, so let's not get carried away. Likewise, GM could roll out a few hundred Volts right now, but what would be the gain?

For more than a year, GM for instance, has been putting the Volt battery pack under rigid battery testing and by the time the Volt goes for sale in 2010, the battery pack will have gone under years of testing in a one of kind battery testing environment designed to replicate a decades worth of use in just a few years.

I guarantee that this PHEV has gone through less QA than the Volt already has undergone.

This is an interesting development, but let's keep a little perspective.

Yeah Anon...and guess, for the most part, who they do all that for? Your dumb-ass sitting the USA.

Perhaps you should cut back on your Walmart and Kmart shopping sprees if you really care that much.
