LA Auto Show: Where's the green?
The coolest green debut in LAYesterday, as I walked the floor of the LA Auto Show for what seemed like the 1000th time in two days, I felt very disappointed. While there were more hybrid cars and electric vehicles than ever displayed here, few will have any impact in the next couple of years. Many will never even be built.
When it comes to fuel economy, particularly city fuel economy, the auto industry has little to offer. 25,000 Ford Fusion hybrids just isn't enough. Nor are small cars, such as the Mini Cooper and its EPA estimated 26 mpg city fuel economy.
And, sure, maybe Nissan will have cost-competitive EVs in 2012, but until then we get nothing? Even then, are EVs the focus of the auto industry, or just a niche product to balance their guzzlers into CAFE compliance?
Green automakers? That's an oxymoron.

No surprise there, obviously the Auto industry is in denial. Perhaps letting Detroit tank is a good thing, it will help them refocus on what is essential to keep their business alive. They have got to know what it take to get the consumers to show them the money and these days it's certainly NOT gas hogs!
Yet, the whole auto industry looks pathetically behind the curve. Although Toyota sells lots of hybrids, it still is too reliant on selling gas-guzzlers to the US. Still, Toyota is far ahead of US automakers.
While I agree that Detroit needs massive restructuring, I do worry that they can't survive bankruptcy. In particular, I think Obama's big plans for change could utilize Detroit, and a bailout with strings would then be a better option than a structured bankruptcy.
