Democrats ready to play hardball with Detroit?
Time to Californiacate Detroit? The state of California wants to regulate CO2 emissions, which would require massive increases in fuel economy - meaning automakers would be forced to roll out tons of new alternative technologies, such as hybrid cars.
In Washington, California Congressman Henry Waxman has argued California's case, and he appears ready to take California's case to a higher pulpit. According to the Financial Times, Waxman "is challenging the dean of the House, John Dingell of Michigan, in his role as chairman of the House energy and commerce committee."
Dingell's protectionism of Detroit, at the expense of CAFE and global warming, according to FT, has irked both Waxman and House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi. Thus, if Waxman does replace Dingell, it would seem that fuel economy and global warming would play a far more significant role in the next session of Congress.

Let California ride bicycles. It would give them a chance to think.
so, instead, we should choke to death on the exhaust of the trillions of dollars we've spent on oil?
we've been through this before and learned nothing. to continue to do the same and expect different results is simply insane.
Exactly right. Look I'm 100% behind a Detroit bailout IN EXCHANGE FOR HIGHER CAFE standards and other requirements. No concessions, no bailout.
And you bring up an excellent point with Waxman. IF we agree to bailout Detroit, we can't have Detroit's bought and paid for Representatives and Senators be in charge of regulating the car industry. Those corrupt congressman are probably as much to blame for ridiculous Detroit policies as Detroit itself.
So, no CAFE standards increase, no bailout. No sane oversight by non-detroit representatives, no bailout. And let the EPA start regulating CO2, if you don't want to let us Californian's lead.
This country would be a cesspool of pollution if it weren't for California leading on the environment for the last 40 years. :) No offense, tobama.
This is so far overdue its not even funny. Dingel should be tried along with Bush and Cheney for escorting our society to its end. Lets start by giving Dingel's home address to the mob of unemployed or soon-to-be-unemployed autoworkers.
Well, I kind of think Dingell represents the typical mindset of Congress. Pork for me at all costs.
Still, the early reports I've read on this subject indicate that it won't be easy for Waxman to unseat Dingell.
Nonetheless, I think it's a good sign. It appears to set the tone that this Congress will be different. I certainly hope so.
