Chevy Volt untouchable (updated)

Volt and the EV1

Early reports coming out of Detroit indicated that, despite program cuts at GM, the Chevy Volt  would continue to be untouchable. As the Volt has become one of GM's best PR tools and its marquee brand for the future, this news was expected.

And, with $25 billion in DOE fuel efficiency loans available, the Volt is the ultimate candidate. So, continuing the Volt program might not even cost GM very much.

Following this post GM announced that it would actually increase spending on the Volt program. Of course, is that because of DOE money? Regardless, without government help, GM won't be able to continue producing the Volt. So, for now, it's all about the bailout.

I like the idea of having the EV1 side by side with the Volt. I get it. However, is GM going to have a sign that says, 'EV1: We screwed up and killed this car and now we have come out with the one next to it'. Just funny to see the EV1. If people (avg. Joe's that don't read tech articles) don't know about the EV1 debacle, they will now!

Well, with the financial news coming out of Detroit this morning. Let's hope this isn't a picture that will be placed in a museum in the future portraying the death of the US auto industry and what might have been.

How ironic. The sole remaining EV1 in existance posing next to the Volt.Makes you wonder why GM killed the EV1 in the 1st place. GM could have decades ahead of everyone else, the Prius would still be playing catch up to the EV1 and GM would be in the black. Unfortunate. They deserve the financial mess they are in.

I don't know that the EV1 itself would have helped GM much, at least not financially. Still, it would have forced them to develop a significant NiMH battery supply chain. This would have been good to keep up the EV1, but even better for GM's hybrid program. Thus, today, GM could have the EV1 on the road, as well as a direct Prius-challenger, as it continued to develop and finalize its E Flex Program.

The EV was a lot bigger than the vehicle itself. It was a symbol of the importance of fuel economy, and GM, unfortunately, showed that at that time fuel economy didn't matter at all.

There's no wondering why they killed the EV1....it's very simple. They were in bed with the oil companies and didn't give a damn about the environment. Any self-respecting engineer would have quit this POS car company rather than sit there and design crap like Suburbans...

I'm not surprised though...engineers, as human beings, are generally idiots. Not too many of them have morals, very few have self-confidence, and many need to make up for their personal deficiencies by working on projects that empower their egos...like military projects...o projects that make them feel big and badass.

I should know...as an engineer myself, I have to deal with morons like these day in/day out....and believe me when I say I'm the odd-man-out amongst them. Many are shocked that I'd not want to work on military weapons.

It's amazing how people involved in the GM projects didn't have a heart regarding the legacy they are to leave behind 10-20 years later. And many of them are families who have kids.

Dahc...what did I say before? Yeah...u know.

noz- i think that GM, like most American companies, has been in bed with profits. ultimately, that is the ONLY thing that matters to most corporations.

Money, money, money. That's become the definition of America - it's all about money. Yet, sadly, no amount of money is ever enough.
