Automaker bailout with natural gas catch
Honda Civic natural gas vehicle next to a home refueling stationToday, Jim Cramer opened MadMoney with his vision for how Obama should solve most of America's major problems in the first 100 days. Regarding energy independence, Cramer called for an immediate automaker bailout, with a catch. To qualify for a bailout, automakers would have to make a serious commitment to natural gas vehicles.
Likewise, oil companies would have to add natural gas pumps to their stations if they wanted any tax incentives. I'd add, if they wanted to avoid a windfall profit tax.
Sounds compelling, however, I would insert some kind of fuel efficiency requirement or tax incentive that would ensure that hybrid and electric vehicle development continues concurrently during this transition. We don't need natural gas guzzlers.
Isn't it time to turn this financial crisis, this need for an automaker bailout, into a an opportunity to end foreign oil dependency ASAP?

Hmmmmm, Jim Cramer sounds like someone who knows what he is talking about. According to Boone Pickens, we have enough natural gas to propel the US fleet for the next 150 years, so this seems like a logical step in the right direction, until such a time as we get our collective heads out of our asses and adopt the electrification of the personal automobile.
Personally, I am leaning HEAVILY towards a CNG vehicle for my next purchase. There are lots of OEM vehicles out there being sold from government fleets in addition to the Honda GX. Unfortunately, we know from the past that BIG OIL as well as the automakers will fight this like a battle to the death. Hateful.
Sorry my freind Jim: But you watch with Pelosi and Reed were screwed! Money is about to be thrown all over the place. Wasted in earmarks , underhanded dealings, promises and abuses will be out of control.....Obama? democrats? I'm so depressed I'm gonna just stop right here.
Not doing anything only sends 100s of billions outside of the US to many countries that hate us, except for our money.
We have to do something. Since we're going to have to give money to automakers, why not use that money to create real change?
