National gas prices below $3.00
Lowest prices in a yearThe national average for a gallon of gas is now $2.92 according to new reports, and prices could be primed for even bigger declines.
Despite OPEC cuts, the price of oil continues to trend downward. And, if the US remains mired in a recession for an extended period of time, oil prices could drop below $40.00 per barrel according to some analysts. (AP)

Hopefully it won't last for long. We need prices to climb.

Gas is *cheaper* than it used to be, but it's far from being *cheap*. Back when the Dumb Cowboy took office, gasoline was $1.29/gallon. We'll never see those days again.
Also, I wouldn't count on gasoline staying below $3/gallon too much past the election. If McCain gets in office, it'll basically be like a third Bush term.
I agree that higher gas prices are good. Unfortunately, I think gas prices are going much lower and I think these prices could last up to a couple of years if this recession is just getting started.
While the recession and cheaper gas might slow the move towards hybrids and electrification, I think that America's love affair with huge gas-guzzlers is over.
That's good, I just don't think it will be good enough.
