Aptera hybrid rocks the box
Can it forever change the auto industry?Last week I highlighted the Citroen Cactus electric car as an example of out of the box thinking. Still, my favorite out of the box thinking example continues to be Aptera.
While I like the Aptera Typ-1e and its 120 mile range, it's the Typ-1h that really captures my attention. Yet, it's neither the 130 mpg+ the Aptera Typ-1h plug-in hybrid will achieve that most arouses my attention, nor its qualification for car pool lane status.
Instead it's the as-safe-as-any-car ultralight composite body that results in space age designs, only 1500 pounds of weight, and .15 drag coefficient (The Toyota Prius is .26) that rocks my world.
The Aptera demonstrates that everything about the automobile needs to be reinvented. Today's automobile shapes, designs - even materials - have become archaic. We can, and must, do better.

It is an amazing car, I agree. Makes me believe that an ordinary American can drive something 60+ mpg in the nearest future. That would be a dramatic reduction in oil consumption.
My next post is going to take a similar vein, but while advanced hybrids and the drive to electrification are great, automakers need to think beyond just powertrains.
While these are small steps toward a respectable goal, Aptera Motors, Inc., a private company based in San Diego, Calif., may be taking a big leap with the Aptera, a three-wheel, two-passenger prototype that aims for an astounding 300 miles per gallon. The company was founded in 2006 by Steve Fambro and Chris Anthony, two independent entrepreneurs with experience in everything from composites and biotechnology to aerodynamics and finance.
This combination of expertise led to the Aptera, a truly unique vehicle that looks like a cross between a dolphin and a helicopter. Technically classified as a motorcycle, the vehicle will only be available to residents of California when it's initially produced. If the Aptera sells well, AC hopes to offer its vehicle to national and international markets.
i'm certainly in their corner.

Do the math, I drove 5,000 miles last month. My Ford Ranger gets about 20 mpg, how much would I have saved, driving an Aptera? 2 weeks ago I bought a 1996 Geo Metro on ebay. With a 3 cyc. 5 speed I can get 60 mpg + and after my mechanic goes end to end I will have 5k in it. Less stylish, the Geo gets better mpg than a Toyota Prius and is certainly cheaper!
But that said, I am #2505 on the Aptera list for a deposit and reservation. The deposit is non binding and refundable. Commiting to support the concept or idea will cost me less than $10. in lost potential interest, had I kept that money in a savings account. But if you want to change Detroit, GO GREEN or break our dependency on foreign oil, then take the plunge, I did! Whats it worth to make our childrens future as good as our present, if its only a loss of $10. for a year, is it worth it to force a change in consumer alternatives?
It takes money to make money and buying a Prius or rehabbing a Geo commits much more than $10.00 Its refundable, so where is the risk? who knows, you may even decide to buy it when your number comes up?

We like that idea.
