State of the auto industry through NFL eyes
This hybrid has NFL written all over itIt seems every pro football player these days drives a Cadillac Escalade, and we can only hope that soon they will all be driving the hybrid version of the Escalade. Until then, the NFL might not be a huge supporter of hybrid cars, but what about the people watching NFL games?
I pondered this question last night as I watched the first NFL game of the season and all the commercials that go along with such a production.

It seems every pro football player these days drives a Cadillac Escalade, and we can only hope that soon they will all be driving the hybrid version of the Escalade. Until then, the NFL might not be a huge supporter of hybrid cars, but what about the people watching NFL games?
I pondered this question last night as I watched the first NFL game of the season and all the commercials that go along with such a production.
Hyundai dominated the first quarter of the game. The new Genesis pulls more g's on turns than a BMW and goes faster from 0 to 60 than a Porsche Boxter. Fuel economy? Who cares. Cheaper gas guzzling luxury for everyone! Exactly what America needs right now.
Then there was Ford and its 'spaceships don't need keys' campaign. Ironic how big of a deal keyless entry and push button start is for Ford when its a Ford vehicle, but how irrelevant these features are when Ford compares the Toyota Prius and the Focus. Oh those pesky double standards.
GM, which probably should have promoted its hybrid SUVs, only had 1 commercial that I saw - the same employee pricing and anniversary commercial that has been airing for some time now. Yes, their SUVs are much cheaper now, but they still guzzle.
Only Toyota offered commercials geared towards fuel economy - mostly. One included hybrid vehicles and another the Corolla. Both commercials emphasized quality, reliability and fuel economy. Still, this is the NFL, so Toyota also threw in a commercial on the big bad Tundra.
So, what does it all mean? What is the state of the auto industry, at least through the eyes of NFL fans? I'm not sure, but it looks pretty confused and contradictory, and despite spaceship analogies, the future - at least tomorrow - looks pretty much like it did yesterday. That can't be a good thing.
I think part of the problem is the enormous egos and insecurities people who are into this NFL crap have.
God forbid we make these meatheads feel unmanly by suggesting they drive hybrids.
I guess I'm part meat head because I enjoy watching a game every now and then.
