Plug-in Tax Credits: Toyota in shock?

To offer less than 6 kWh of electricity?

Yesterday, Robert Wimmer, the National Manager of Energy and Environmental Research for Toyota Motor North America, lobbied the Senate Energy and National Resources committee not to pass new legislation that will give tax breaks to the Chevrolet Volt, or other plug-in hybrids with batteries that hold at least six kilowatt-hours of electricity.

"Toyota believes this approach is counterproductive," said Wimmer in a statement before the committee. "It will discourage manufacturers from developing and consumers from purchasing 'blended' plug-ins that are affordable to the greatest number of consumers."

So, the plug-in Prius won't offer 6 kWh worth of electricity? Is it even worth it to make a plug-in hybrid if it doesn't offer at least 6 kWh? Has GM's Volt actually rattled Toyota?

6kwh is something around 30 miles without A/C. If someone sells a plugin that offers only 3kwh or 15 miles of range is still pretty good.

It seems the law could be progressive to offer rebates based on the size with smaller getting less.

lb-

in most cases 6 kWh would be far insufficient to achieve 30 miles of electricity, especially at highway speeds.

the volt, for instance, is using 16 kwh to achieve 40 miles of electricity. this battery pack could achieve more electric power, but only by extending the sweet spot of the battery, which would significantly shorten the lifespan of the battery while making more volatile.

anon- i'm not against a progressive law, such as was done with the last hybrid tax credit. i'd also like to see two separate tax credits, such as one for electric power and one for mpg.

if 40 miles of electric power is worth 7500, then maybe 150 mpg should be worth 7500?
