Automaker bailout isn't a bailout?
Chrysler's idea of hybrid technologyEarlier today I changed my stance and suggested that Congress give Detroit automakers the money they are seeking, with conditions that mandate more change than just new CAFE.
Let's ensure the bailout leads to guaranteed change, I thought, but then I learned it's not a bailout. The Big 3 don't really need the money. It's for us - you and me - Joe Customers.
"It's not a bailout. It's an acceleration of technology into the hands of consumers who couldn't afford it," Chrysler's Jim Press said.
Huh? You can't find a hybrid today on a lot. Toyota is months behind demand for its hybrid cars, and is increasing production as fast as possible. Next year Honda will sell more hybrids than the Big 3 combined by a couple times at least. This money isn't about helping consumers, it's about one thing, bailing out Detroit's over-dependence on large SUVs and trucks.

Absolute denial. I have no faith in the US auto industry.
We should only help if they move the plants back to the U.S. Why should we foot the bill if we dont get something in return? BMW and Toyato build more cars herh than Ford.
from what i understand, the money has to be used for plants in the US. even more interesting, it's my understanding that even toyota could qualify for some of this money, as long as its for their US plants.
still, i agree with your larger point that it must be ensured that america gets something back.
unfortunately, congress is now trying to rush this funding before they go on break, again, so i'm sure there will be countless loopholes.
This is insanity?!?! My tax dollars have absolutely nothing to do with failing business!!! I'm sorry joe-bob's pizza shop on the corner of 5th couldn't make rent this month, do they get federal money too?!
it's a done deal now. so i guess all we can do now is hope for the best.
