Toyota to launch plug-in Prius in 2009

Coming a year ahead of schedule

Due to rising fuel economy concerns, Toyota is going to "quickly and flexibly" respond according to reports coming out of Japan. Thus, Toyota will launch a plug-in Prius for fleet customers in late 2009, a year ahead of schedule. It will also speed up development on pure electric cars as the hybrid king increases production on hybrid vehicles.

Fleet!? Crap. Let's get a shell not-for-profit club going called, "People Against Expensive Gas/Gas Guzzlers" or something and see if we can all get in on a "Fleet" deal.

Bring on the electrics. Nice job Toyota.

Hopefully, they will ease up the restrictions limiting sales to fleets and allow the public access to these cars.

At any rate, this is the best news I have seen in a LONG time!

hey, i like this 'fleet club' idea. i wonder how many vehicles it takes to make a fleet?

nonetheless, i'd bet there are more than enough fleet managers to buy as many prius plug-ins as toyota can make. in fact, i don't think they will even come close to matching demand.

Looks good, but is it going to be as awesome as an Aptera vehicle? I doubt these can ever get the same range as a 300 mpg Aptera hybrid.

Aptera...different animal. It's a glorified motorcycle in a sense. I think it's great, but many people would balk at the look of it. After they drive a PHEV Prius, they'll start looking at the Aptera and think, "I can get even more MPG's with that thing! I want it." It would be cool to own one though.

Agreed, I think they will struggle to keep up with demand, then they'll buy out some GM plants are start building them there so we can all have a modern vehicle.

Exactly. You can't compare the Aptera and a Prius PHEV. Still, I love the Aptera and I'll love the Prius PHEV, but they are apples and oranges.
