Prop10 - Has California gone hybrid crazy?

A $5 billion bond for clean energy

A few times per hour I'm seeing Yes on 10 commercials on CNBC. What is Yes on 10?

"Proposition 10 is a five billion dollar bond measure which will reduce California’s dependence on foreign oil; clean our air of asthma and cancer causing chemicals; and create thousands of new green technology jobs in California."

These objectives will be achieved with consumer rebates on hybrid cars, EVs and other vehicles capable of achieving 45 mpg. Additionally, it will help retire old diesel vehicles, add more renewables to the electric grid and fund research.

Hybridcarblog wants to support this measure, but with a $22 billion budget shortfall, we wonder if such a proposition good for California right now, or should bond measures be limited until this massive deficit is under better control?

I'm also wondering, with an inefficient supply of 45 mpg vehicles on the market, do such rebates provide any incentive when consumers are already sucking them up as fast as possible?

As a long time proponent of tax credits for hybrids, I'm finding it hard to see what hybrid tax credits can accomplish in the next year or two. Is there really any bang for the buck right now?

If such a plan moves forward, maybe more tax incentives for solar installations should be pushed rather than rebates for purchasing efficient vehicles - except in the case of large rigs. There would seem to be more of a gain with such a rebate.

Not only should tax credits continue for hybrid vehicles, they should also be given to very fuel efficient cars.

They should also charge people tax burdens for driving inefficient cars. Why the hell shouldn't a person living at the top of a mountain home with his Escalade, M3, and whatever else not pay extra taxes? Rewards for good and punishment for bad....very simple.

Of course, I'm now waiting for all the pseudo-patriots to come in and claim I'm a socialist and fascist.

I definitely agree with noz! Tax credits are worthless if they don't build very fuel-efficient cars.

I also think GM should start producing more hybrid cars with a higher MPG.

i'm a big advocate for hybrid tax credits. still, what does a rebate accomplish when the supply of such vehicles will already sell without any rebate?

also, considering the cost of most hybrids, for example, such a rebate certainly doesn't help the working class people of California, especially when the state is facing a $22 billion shortfall for this fiscal year.

so, where is the bang for the buck?

i'm all for a guzzler tax, or simpler, gas tax. a gas tax would reward buying more efficient vehicles and the extra tax revenue could replace any tax revenue lost from driving less.

this plan is too american. what does the average american do when they have too much debt? do they save and try to pay down? no, they take out a bigger loan.

cheap gas has retarded most americans and one way or the other we're going to suffer the consequences.

It's difficult to understand the savings one can get from owning a hybrid when they are so expensive. Not only that, they are not all built for use in certain climates. The U.S. has many diverse regions and in the northern tier, they may not be so efficient from the standpoint the frame on some makes sits a bit lower...not good in deep snow areas and makes for caution in bad weather.

dan,

and what does that have to do with Prop 10?

I hate to say this, but people with gas guzzlers already pay more taxes than those without. They likely pay more in taxes already on their vehicles, but they're also buying more gas... and as we all know, gas is heavily taxed already. No need to punish them further.

and if they lived in europe, they would pay far, far more in taxes. they pay more in taxes because they guzzle more. i gas tax wouldn't discriminate against gas guzzlers, it would make everyone more responsible for their fuel consumption.

we're going to spend trillions in iraq because of gas guzzling - a tax we all have to pay equally, even the guzzlers deserve more responsibility.

They don't pay close to what they should be paying proportionally on usage, emissions, and damage. Many SUVs emit 2-4 times more emissions than a regular car...tax them on that....and let's see how they feel.

You get taxed on waste right? Well...exhaust is waste.

As the Democratic Convention wraps up and the hoopla of the Republican Convention heats up Americans are still left with a sense of a lot of hot air of any concrete plans to end the energy crisis in America. Northerners dread the upcoming onset of fall and colder weather wondering how they will be able to afford how to keep their homes and families warm. Southerners have been sweating the high cost of energy raising the thermostat to save on their electric bills. Families everywhere are wondering where else they can cut back to cover the cost of fueling up the family vehicle to get back and forth to work and take care of the necessities of life. There is no money left for relaxation and family fun. The stress level continues to rise. The average electric bill has risen 16% to cover the power companies additional production costs. A gallon of milk is almost as precious as a gallon of gas. The cost of every consumer product has risen sharply. American's are stretched to the limit. Jobs are being lost, foreclosures are increasing at an alarming rate. Seems even the family pets are suffering the high cost of fuel as almost daily a new story is on TV about shelters being forced to euthanize record number of surrendered pets from those forced out of their homes or no longer able to care for them. The energy crisis in our country is far reaching and needs immediate attention. I am hoping whoever gets elected will get their act together and make this their #1 priority.

An interesting site to share...

Republicans seem hell bent on more oil drilling and nuclear power - something Democrats will fight endlessly.

Democrats claim the future is alternative energy, something Republicans will fight endlessly. Even worse, with Democrats controlling Congress, solar tax credits are expiring, and small business tax credits for gas guzzlers still exist.

Whether the next President has good ideas or not, if we continue to let the same jokers in Congress to create this country's legislation, I don't think much will change.

Democrats, Republicans - they might talk differently, but they seem to walk the same walk. Words, words, words, but little action.

Americans WILL HAVE TO DEAL with feeling pain. This the reality of life.

Like that idiot Republican rep Cantor who was on Larry King Live yesterday...he kept repeating..."The most important thing on American's minds is high fuel prices...American's are tired of paying for high fuel prices...."

Mr. Cantor....WAH...WAH...WAH...go cry me a river.

People in this country need a good hard kick in the ass...to wake up, to take more personal responsibility...to understand what the cost of REAL LIFE is.

As Obama said....enough is enough.

I don't know Noz. Can't say I have that much faith in Obama. It's not really Obama, per say, it's his ability to rally the people and, more importantly Congress.

Democrats in Congress want to make gas cheaper, but cheaper gas will only exacerbate the problems we already are facing.

We the people are screwed for some time. We can only hope that being screwed makes us smarter and that we make better decisions as we head into the future.

Barack might help, but he can't change decades of Congressional incompetence with his Presidency.

Dahc,

I didn't mean to say Obama will make anything better. Regardless of who's in power...Americans are going to have to eat shit and pay for their waste, use, and lifestyles just like everyone else around the world.

Free lunch is over.

Obama may not do much at all but you can be rest-assured that McCain will destroy this country. Republicans want to fix everything without raising any taxes.

Are they going to pull the money required out of their collective asses? Perhaps they can dip into Cheney's bank account? Who knows.

It's amazing how the general populous of this country wants everything for free and feel no pain.
