Most cost-effective gas savers according to Intellichoice

The most cost effective mid-sized gas saver

According to Edmunds, most hybrid vehicles are not good buys because they cost more. Accordingly, a Honda Fit without air conditioning or cruise control and little more than a cheap AM/FM radio is a better deal than the Toyota Prius, simply because the Prius costs more. I won't even get into keyless entry, etc, for example, because such features have even far less value to Edmunds.

However, others, such as Consumer Reports, have perpetually picked the Prius as one of the most cost-effective vehicles to own. And it isn't just CR.

Finish: Most cost effective gas savers

nakul,

hybrid cars make conventional cars significantly more fuel efficient, while providing huge reductions in pollution, including CO2 emissions.

more important, hybrid cars are the first step in the electrification of the automobile, which could cut pollution and emissions even further, while making more efficient use of energy and reducing america's dependence on foreign oil.

FULL STORY for those that haven't clicked through

According to Edmunds, most hybrid vehicles are not good buys because they cost more. Accordingly, a Honda Fit without air conditioning or cruise control and little more than a cheap AM/FM radio is a better deal than the Toyota Prius, simply because the Prius costs more. I won't even get into keyless entry, etc, for example, because such features have even far less value to Edmunds.

However, others, such as Consumer Reports, have perpetually picked the Prius as one of the most cost-effective vehicles to own. And it isn't just CR. Many other auto raters have given high marks to the Prius. Maybe that's because CR and the likes of JD Power have found the Prius to be the most reliable vehicle in its class. But, reliability, like cruise control, is so over rated - sticker price is the only thing that matters, right?

Anyway, CNN.com asked Intellichoice.com to find 5 really cost effective fuel savers and they added such features as cruise control and silly things like reliability to the value of an auto and here's what they found, at least in terms of hybrid cars.

The Toyota Prius was named the most cost effective fuel saving midsized car, largely due to its amazing resale value. The Honda Civic hybrid took the compact segment for cost effectiveness, which also offers great resale value. And, finally, the Mazda Tribute hybrid took the small crossover segment.

A number of other hybrid vehicles also ranked well, but I focused only on the winners. Nonetheless, most hybrid vehicles currently on the market also scored well.

While it is currently true that hybrid vehicles are less economically efficient to purchase, new vehicles like the Aptera are going to negate that. Why is this? Well, the Aptera hybrid only costs about $30k and it is going to get 300 mpg. So say you travel 15,000 miles a year. This means you are going to only use about 50 gallons of gas a year. After about 7 years, it will be cheaper to have purchased a hybrid Aptera than to have purchased something like a $17k Corolla. This Aptera is going to set off the switch to Hybrid's I think.

but its a two-seater. do you really think a two seat vehicle, which completely defied consumer expectations about the way a vehicle is supposed to look can have such an impact?

while I'd buy one, I don't believe the Aptera can have that kind of impact.
