Ford Hybrids: Safer than Toyota

A 5 Star Safety vehicle

The 2009 Ford Escape hybrid and the Mercury Mariner hybrid are both 5 star rated vehicles according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. And Ford hopes to use this rating as a way to promote its hybrid vehicles over Toyota. Both the Toyota Prius and the Highlander hybrid received 4 stars.

Soon, Ford will launch the Ford Fusion hybrid and the Mercury Milan hybrid, and the automaker hopes to double the sales of its hybrid vehicles.

That's four hybrid vehicles. Yet, Ford is only hoping to sell 50,000 hybrids?

It is widely believed that SUVs are MUCH safer than smaller autos. Indeed, it is true unless your SUV has not rolled over... And they do turn over more often.

Namely,
Runge added that rollovers accounted for just 3 percent of all U.S. auto accidents in 2001 but caused nearly a third of all vehicle-occupant fatalities, and an SUV occupant was more than three times as likely to die as a result of a rollover than an occupant of a passenger car, the paper reported.

I know that these hybrid suvs have electronic stability control and extra air bags to help manage rollover situations. there is no doubt that these have become much safer vehicles.

what's funny i think, is how really bad SUV safety was for decades, particularly in terms of death, yet they were marketed and perceived to be ultra-safe. who many millions of suvs were sold under this false pretense?
