Energy policy: No faith in either candidate?
Can either candidate really motivate Congress?According to a Cars.com survey, a majority of Americans don't believe that either Barack Obama or John McCain can lead America to a significant change in energy policy.
"In an online survey of 1,052 individuals 18 years or older across demographic groups, a majority (50%) believed that neither John McCain nor Barack Obama could bring down gas prices as president. A majority (48%) also rejected the idea that either candidate had an edge when it comes to working effectively with automakers to produce more fuel-efficient vehicles."
Cheaper gas prices and more fuel efficient cars? Aren't such expectations unrealistic and, even worse, contradictory? If gas prices are made significantly cheaper, won't Americans quickly forget all about fuel economy?

Amen to that. Besides being in general denial about Peak Oil, the public gets sucked into media stories about these guys being able to control oil prices. Big media lives off of ad revenue from the automotive (and pharmaceutical) industries. The nightly news is careful about pissing off sponsors.
Big-business-paranoia aside, people don't want to believe the end of cheap oil. They think there's just tons of oil off of the beach that we're ignoring. Just go stick a pipe in the sand at the beach, get rich off the black gold, and go buy Jed Clampett's mansion!
If the ignorant general public could handle it, Obama should speak on Peak Oil. He's afraid of losing the votes though. Its a shame a campaign has to cater to general ignorance. McCain will sell ideas to the ignorant. Lets hope they're in the minority come November.
Love the Jed Clampett line.
"Its a shame a campaign has to cater to general ignorance." Couldn't agree with that more.
To kpdriscoll: That was a good comment, and I completely agree.
I simply wanted to say that working with American automakers and bringing down gas prices should not be used as indicators of an energy policy. Instead, look at a candidate's plan to reduce the dependency on oil (not just foreign oil, but oil in general cause one day, we will run out!), put in place wind/solar/tidal power systems, improving electrical power grids, more efficient homes... the list goes on.
