Chrysler, Cherokee Hybrid and the future
Chrysler's next big hybrid move?Chrysler is on the verge of launching a few large hybrid SUVs. Great news, right? Not when production is in numbers that will barely show up on Chrsyler's monthly sale's sheet. Thus, to learn that Chrysler is also going to develop a Jeep Grand Cherokee hybrid for 2011 leaves me feeling, well, unimpressed.
Doesn't Chrysler need to take a much more serious stab at fuel economy to brighten its future? Why not do something no other US automaker has yet done, such as announce a unique, conventional hybrid car to challenge the Toyota Prius?
Instead, it's just another BIG hybrid SUV. So original. So unexpected.
Isn't it time for Chrysler to distinguish itself from the pack?

I thought I read somewhere that they were going to make a 4 wheel drive range extended model like the Volt (a motor on each axle) as a Wrangler I believe?
Anyone else hear anything?
I saw some prototypes at the last Detroit Auto Show, but they offered few details on whether they were actually working on the technology. The vehicles appeared to be in the very early concept stages. In addition to the jeep, there was a minivan and one other vehicle that I can't recall right now. Since, I've not heard one update about any further developments, which leads me to believe that such a program has yet to be budgeted. Thus far, such vehicles appear to be purely conceptual.
Perhaps they are already thinking of a GM partnership, much like they have on dual mode hybrid technology.
Probably waiting for their lobbyists to finish their work before actually cohering to a working, updated business model. I just wish these smaller firms could crank out their vehicles in larger numbers and cheaper (for my sake). I'd just assume buy a Tesla, Fiskar, Phoenix, ZENN, or some other small company. The Big 3+ have just burned the bridge and polluted the river doing so at this point.
yeah. I can't wait to see the bailout Congress is going to tee up for the auto industry.
I too would love to see one of these small companies turn into a major player. it would be the most exciting thing to happen to the north american auto industry in many decades.

Yes, the looming bailout bothers me a lot too. I think Chrysler's big problem also is that they don't really have a lot of smaller vehicles that they could convert to hybrid.
sounds like a perfect opportunity to develop a small unique hybrid.
