Big price increase for third gen Prius?
Bigger, faster, pricier than this? When Toyota announced that it was going to raise prices on some of its hybrid cars in Japan last week, it was hard not to wonder if more price increases are looming for Toyota's hybrids sold in the US. Since Toyota can't keep up with demand at current prices, a price increase seems logical.
More interesting, what does this mean for the next gen Prius, which should be in dealerships by this time next year? As the new Prius will be longer, wider, faster and more fuel efficient, in addition to highly coveted, a price increase seems almost required.

honda better keep its hybrid price as planned, otherwise, I'll never afford a hybrid.
I guess Toyota has also realized just how much money people are willing to part with on a monthly basis for a car. Truly ludicrous amounts.
Now the average amount people piss away on a car is well above $400 a month + insurance + fuel. It's totally out of control. And this is the average....
Around where I live, practically everyone is driving around in a new car that runs well above $30K sticker. I estimate people around here (Glendale/Pasadena) spend well in excess of $500 per month for their Audis, Beemers, and Benzes.
I refuse to pay above $20K for a car. I would love to have a hybrid. But I am not willing to be one of these idiots who goes and pays $35K for a Camry hybrid, $40K for a Mini Clubman ($40K!!!!), or $35K for a Prius...I mean seriously...let's get real. $600-700 month of debt for a car?
Thanks..but no thanks.
Supply vs Demand.... in this case, Toyota (demand) wins.
I don't think it's as easy as that. I don't believe in supply/demand anymore. There is too much manipulation in the market for it to be simply supply/demand.
well, toyota rarely raises prices in japan, except when releasing update versions of the same care. in this case, rising material costs are forcing toyota's hand, at least that's their public statement on the price increase. almost all commodities are priced higher these days, thus, steal costs more.
isn't that supply and demand?

If the price of hybrids all rise above $30k, then my next car won't be able to be a hybrid. But you can still get decent FE out of a Cobalt or a Corolla.
Honda seems to have the right idea, so there should be some hybrids in your price range, even if the Prius MSRP starts to go up significantly.
of course, that's before dealer markups. hopefully, now that honda has committed to hybrids, they can find a way to ramp up hybrid production much faster than the auto industry has thus far witnessed.
I guess we'll have to wait and see...if there are markups on the new Fit a I am assuming there will be, you can kiss the idea of a cheap hybrid goodbye.
this is where gas guzzlers have really screwed america. now that fuel economy is hurting average americans, we don't have many options. for example, many have switched to motorcycles, but motorcycle deaths have risen. if there weren't such monstrous, heavy vehicles on the road, it would be so much easier to downsize.
we painted ourselves into a corner with a huge gas-guzzling brush.
