Mercedes: The Prius doesn't make sense

The future of hybrid cars?

According to a report in LeftLaneNews, one of Mercedes' top vehicle researchers claimed that the Toyota Prius doesn't make sense for manufacturers, as LeftLane itself assumed stating that Toyota "is known to have absorbed enormous losses to keep its Prius Hybrid at the forefront of the green revolution".

According to Toyota, money is made off every Prius, and I wonder how many non-hybrids Toyota sold through the years simply because of the hybrid halo? And, how much extra money are dealers making now because of the Prius, of the Camry hybrid?

Still, head of Mercedes-Benz’s Research and Development, Dr Thomas Weber, told LeftLane “Most hybrids have a price premium but the question is whether the premium is enough to earn money. On smaller cars, that answer is ‘no’ right now, but we are developing modular architecture for hybridization and we believe it will be possible to be profitable straight away.”

Maybe small hybrids aren't profitable for Mercedes, but I'll bet Toyota isn't complaining. Likewise, Honda's new hybrid religion seems quite contrary to Mercedes - so, I think I'll put my money on Honda and Toyota.

IMO, Mercedes needs to bring up their long term quality before i would purchase a hybrid from them.

At least, Toyota/Honda have field tested technology to feed into future generations.

Here's what doesn't make sense: $90000 cars that get 24 miles to the gallon, half of which half to be bullet-proofed inorder to protect the drivers from common sense.

What a pathetic thing to say from Mercedes.

I can't stand these pompous cars...made by a pompous company for even more pompous douchebags who drive them.

It sounds to me that Mercedes is extremely bitter of the fact that they are getting their asses slammed by Toyota in the efficiency and technology department.

Toyota has, with the Prius, made a car that has extremely sophisticated electronics of which MB could only dream of. MB is plagued with electrical and software issues....they simply do not have the ability to make cars that are as good period...for any prize.

Everyone ohhhs and ahhhs as to how fast MB is and how luxurious they are. So freaking what that their luxury cars with huge V8's accelerate quickly...is that such an achievement?

They really are a pathetic excuse for a car company these days. And as far as environmental disasters go, they are well up there with the worst of what Detroit can offer.

Hybrids make since in the long run. I guess Mercedes hasn't taken that into account.

Yep, it is a well known fact that Mersedes-Benz is a luxurious car to drive to service centers.

I'm sure you already know as you live in the same area I do....but it's AMAZING how many people in the Glendale/Burbank/La Canada area drive MB....honestly, if it wasn't for these morons, Germany would go bankrupt.

It's very very sad how shallow and vain people really are....really pathetic.

noz,

i really love it when i see a luxury vehicle pull into a crappy apartment complex. they'd rather live in a crappy apartment for the rest of their life, with no savings, just so they can look cool for the valet at the club.

of course, eventually, the repo man usually comes calling and we, the tax payers, help write off their bankruptcy! good times, brother!

As a former MB tech (which I am so proud to NOT be anymore) MB is just as most have written here in this blog. And yes some of the customers are ......well I'll just say full of old theory about an old company that doesn't exist anymore! If you do own a MB well good luck! Electrical pompus garbage! Windsheild wiper systems that don't make any sense..one arm arms and blade unit STUPID!! Window regulators!! And if you so much as dare to check the air filter you better have a spare mass airflow sensor because you may just blow the unit out when you "disturb" it! Junk junk junk!!Honda , Subaru, Toyota, Acura, Infiniti, no problem (not a Nissan fan either give ya a hint American CEO)but quality in German cars period has gone down the tubes! They were never any good at electronics in cars anyway really. Look at the fuel injection on MB's to this day its pathetic. Over technical for what? And the garbage still brakes more than a Dodge neon!!

This wouldn't have anything to do with their involvement with the "Smart Car" would it?
