GM to sell Hummer, focus on fuel efficiency?

GM: Think Volt, not Hummer

GM is going to close several truck plants, consider selling the Hummer brand, and focus on building more fuel efficient vehicles, such as hybrid cars and other small vehicles. Additionally, the GM board has approved final production funding for the Chevy Volt. (AFP)

Wikipedia: “Most electricity generation in the United States is from fossil sources, according to the US DOE. Overall average efficiency from US power plants (33% efficient) to point of use (transmission loss 9.5%), (US DOE figures) is 29.87% . Accepting 90% efficiency for the electric vehicle gives us a figure of 26.88% overall efficiency. That is lower than internal combustion engine vehicles (Petrol/Gasoline 30% efficient, Diesel engines 45% efficient - Volvo figures).”

Choosing an electric vehicle over an internal combustion vehicle increases one’s carbon footprint. The much maligned H2 owner is as green and perhaps greener than the newest EV owner.

That assumes, EVGreen?, charging during peak hours. According to studies by Argonne, for instance, if EVs plug-in at night, they are simply using excess capacity, thus no new electricity is being generated. Therefore, such EVs would reduce CO2 compared to gasoline usage.

Likewise, an EV uses energy more efficiently than ICE vehicles.

That finding has also been supported by other studies, which I'll cite when you cite your studies demonstrating how EVs will increase CO2 emissions.

I'll bet they don't exist because you are simply wrong. Your basing your beliefs on emotion, not fact.

Additionally, if charging stations use smart grid technology, such as at office buildings, EVs could help balance electric load making the current grid smarter and more efficient.

In such a scenario, EVs would be used as storage devices of excess electricity during peak demand, helping peaked out grid to avoid blackouts and brownouts, and also helping better manage their electricity production. In other words, EVs would increase grid efficiency.

Please get your facts straight next time.
