Foreign oil: $40+ billion fricken dollars per month

Foreign oil profits to buy Chrysler building

$40+ billion per month. That's the cost of foreign oil dependency. Sadly, that doesn't even include the billions per year that the US spends on Coast Guard and military costs to secure shipping lanes for oil tankers. Then, add in war costs, and the amount of money being 'exported' to major oil exporters isn't just alarming, it's disgusting.

Congress can talk about exporting jobs, outsourcing, etc., but imagine what Congress could accomplish by funding a revolution against energy dependence. I don't just mean tax credits for hybrid cars, I mean what if the US had invested that kind of money into solar power, wind power, smarter biofuels, etc - talk about jobs and exportable technology! Unfortunately, Congress - both Democrats and Republicans - have just been too busy eating lobbyist-funded pork.

We, the people, have allowed and enabled politicians to sell out America in the name of militarily-secured, cheap foreign oil. Has it been worth it? Are we going to do anything about it?

Well said! The opportunity for investment in this country is really exciting. I know the moment oil crashes back down in price certain types are going to cry about spending money on "alternative energy," but what's the problem? Oil will go back up, and in the meantime you're creating the potential for whole new areas of economic activity.

Eisenhower invested in highways. Let the next president invest in "alternative energy" production. Both will spur massive economic activity, IMHO.

We are paying WELL OVER $5 a gallon for fuel...

As I said before, 40% of my tax dollars go to funding this war...40%.

My wife and I paid $40K in taxes last year...so $16K of that went to the way...God knows how much else went to Israel.

Let's factor that amount into our gallon of fuel cost shall we?

It's a good thing I recently became a Canadian resident...it's becoming more and more attractive to want to leave this country once and for all.

One more thing...all these damned whiners in Detroit losing their jobs...how about those idiots get off their collective fat asses and go and find work in alternative energy fields? Solar, wind, etc...there's plenty of work to go around..they could use a hand...

Instead....what do they do? Bitch and whine about how they can't keep putting together pieces of shit SUV's and trucks that have no business being on the road anymore.

Idiots.

hey noz, they're complaining up in your future country, Canada, as well. When GM announced plans to close large truck building in factory in Ontario, they freaked.

if i were gonna move right now, i'd be headed to Brazil. too much winter in canada for me.
