Chevy Volt battery breezing through tests

GM almost ready to pick its supplier

GM's Bob Lutz told Reuters that the Chevy Volt continues to hit all benchmarks and that the battery is performing so well that GM is on the verge of naming is supplier, either A123 Systems and/or LG Chem. More important, the Volt should be ready for its 2010 launch.

"I would say there's almost no reasonable doubt in our minds anymore that this is going to work," said Lutz, who heads vehicle development for GM.

Lutz also took a poke at Toyota claiming it was GM that forced Toyota to reconsider lithium-ion batteries for hybrid cars and that reporters should remember that GM pushed forward with something that Toyota said wasn't possible.

I found Lutz's shot at Toyota a little weak. I remember Toyota telling BW that lithium was ready, then pulling back and stating that it wouldn't be used in the first run of the third generation prius, which could launch as much as a year or more before the volt.

ultimately, toyota can't keep up with prius demand. toyota has long surpassed the million hybrid vehicle mark, but gm is winning the battle of words?

lets just let the products do the talking.

Let products do the talking? Products like the GM BAS mild hybrids? GM had to recall about 9000 Cobasys batteries used in GM Belt-Alternator-Starter hybrids due to leaks and operating failures. Naturally, availability of new GM BAS hybrids pretty much dried up as the battery production was all diverted to the recall. Mr. Lutz shouldn't be thumping his chest quite yet.

Good point, although its my understanding that the battery problem was a manufacturing defect attributable to Cobasys, which is not in the running to supply batteries for the Volt.

The rhetoric, however, is going to get much worse. There is speculation that GM is going to begin a new line of commercials, 'Dear John' commercials where GM says goodbye to gasoline - featuring the Volt.

That just seems silly to me considering that up until a few months ago, GM was still very bullish on gas guzzlers - i mean oil guzzlers.

I think the Volt is going to end up harming more than helping the EV vehicle case...it's going to have so many problems and issues that it's not going to be funny.

Lutz is an arrogant idiot. Nothing short of that.
