VW, Nissan update plans for hybrid batteries

More lithium hybrids on the way

Both Volkswagen and Nissan updated their lithium-ion battery plans this weekend. While VW will start rolling NiMH-based hybrid vehicles as early as next year, the automaker hopes to convert to lithium by 2012 using Sanyo Electric to supply both batteries.

Nissan, which already sells the Altima hybrid with NiMH batteries, will begin producing lithium-ion batteries next year with its partner NEC. (Reuters via Yahoo).
