Supply shortage: Better buy your Prius now?

It's hot, hot, hot

Toyota dealers are beginning to run short on their Prius supplies, according to Bloomberg, as supplies have fallen to their lowest levels in two years. Currently, the eighth best selling car in the US through April, the Prius no longer qualifies for any incentives. And, because of battery shortages, the supply of Toyota Prius hybrids is only expected to decline, despite a recent increase in pricing - currently the Prius costs $869 more than last year.

If you've been contemplating a Prius purchase this summer, it might be best to act sooner, rather than later.

I ordered a 2008 Prius 3 weeks ago, put down a deposit, and assumed that would lock in the price. Thousands of others must have done the same. Expected delivery? Eight to ten weeks. On May 7 Toyota raised the price by about $400. Only car manufacturers can get away with the following: even though car buyers put down a deposit for a set price, the dealer can now raise the price. Perhaps Toytoa limits the supply of the Prius, takes the orders, then raises the price. Does something smell fishy here?

chances are that prices might even go up further. several years ago, the problem was even worse. unfortunately, there isn't a huge supply of NiMH batteries today and that isn't going to change any time soon.

a few months ago, you wouldn't have had to put in an order for a prius, but demand has been increasing significantly each month.

your dealer still has some control over price. i would try to get the dealer to offer you the price you negotiated or get your deposit back.

I've considered that. But there's that barrel: why give you the price you negotiated when they can sell it for more in an instant? Everything is on the side of Toyota.
