Can hybrid technology save large SUVs

So big it's scary?

Not only are the sales of largest SUVs declining, resale value is also racing downward. All of this as happened as GM's large hybrid SUVs have hit the road, but are these hybrid vehicles the solution to high gas costs for SUV drivers?

Probably not. In the last two months GM has sold a combined 1000 such hybrids combined.

It's not that hybrid SUVs, such as the Chevy Tahoe hybrid or the GMC Yukon hybrid, don't offer a huge increase in fuel economy, they do. With a 50 percent improvement in city fuel economy, these hybrid SUVs provide a great increase in fuel economy over their conventional counterparts. But they are still huge, and they cost $50,000+.

For those needing a large SUV, these hybrid SUVs are a good deal. For everyone else, however, smaller vehicles seem to be looking better by the minute, or at least every penny that gasoline prices increase.

well, i'm not a fan of large suvs. nonetheless, in april tens of thousands of large suvs were still sold, despite high gas prices. i'd much rather have such buyers buying hybrid suvs.

It's amazing isn't it....that even with all that is going on, these idiots are still buying large vehicles.

Truly, with such a stupid populous base, I really don't think such stupidity can be overcome.

At least they are paying a lot for gas now!

As long as gasoline is that cheap ( isn“t it ? ), car makers do just little effort to make straight; without gimmicks (weight) loaded normal car looking hybrids.
Batteries have today about 1/100 of the energy density compared to fossil fuel; so we must think about weight (SUVs are under that point of view a total disaster) and comfort reduction.
For rational drivers slim cares are more sexy than e.g. SUV. (They make the polar bear less sweating)

Yeah, it seems SUVs are dead. I thought the writing was on the wall after 9/11, then for sure after Iraq, and absolutely after Katrina, but I guess people just can't handle the truth sometimes.

Does anyone understand, for some people, an SUV is a must.If one is going to tow or need the interior space, a SUV is the ticket. I'm sure they can not use a Prius. Surely, I can understand that. At least GM's SUV which gets the same gas mileage in the city as the Camry 4 cylinder, a little praise should be given for such an accomplishment.

i've continually supported hybrid suvs for those that truly need a large suv.

still, i don't blame large suv drivers, i blame the government and the suv drivers voting for them - just kidding. seriously, i do blame the government. however, since, we the people, vote for the government, i guess i blame the people.

ANON:

So 50% of Califoria's population MUST have 8 passenger vehicles?

Is that what you are saying? What exactly are they towing 2-3 hours a day in traffic? Hmmm?

What....are they worried that if their kids don't sit in a freaking living room in 4 wheels somehow their kids will turn out be retards and scared for life?

Newsflash...their kids won't have anything left on this planet to look forward to thanks to their brainless parents who think it's great have a 6000lb vehicle getting 15MPG to buy a loaf of bread.

noz-

almost always, there is no excuse for these large SUVs in places like LA, or at least very little excuse. yet, its amazing how these vehicles seem more popular in la than in detroit.

however, in places like detroit, especially outside of detroit, or many non-urban areas, people do put these vehicles to use. i definitely believe that a certain percentage of these suv users have a legitimate need for such a vehicle. that's why i advocate that these consumers buy the hybrid version.
