Volt no hoax: It's a large SUV bargaining chip?

GM's critics have it all wrong?

There are many whom believe that GM's Chevy Volt is a publicity stunt, and that it will never see the light of day. According to WSJ, GM is absolutely sincere about the Chevy Volt, but for all the wrong reasons. GM will develop the Chevy Volt, but only as a bargaining chip to work with Congress to develop CAFE in a way that protects GM's SUVs. In a way, as ethanol credits fade, Volt credits will kick in. Yes and BushCo was "absolutely" sincere about WMD's.

If GM sincere about their efforts to make a difference, their initial offering to the Chinese as the car of choice surely says otherwise.

As their ambassador product, they market the Escalade to the Chinese. What does that say about GM? What does that say about their intentions? That while they are posing around showing us vaporware, they are screwing us in the rear by now selling even more of their POS barges to an even bigger population??

China is Wagoneer's and Lutz's wet dreams come true. They are laughing their asses off at all of us right now because they know that they can loose all the money they want on the Volt and in the end produce nothing...because they have Chinese people who will buy their poison to make up for it and then some.

China is the life raft GM was looking for. And it's no coincidence that they are marketing SUV's over there without any hesitation whatsoever...EVEN WITH ALL the issues they damned well know we will be facing with China's HUGE...HUGE upcoming oil consumption requirements.

I can't think of a bigger F' YOU by GM to all of us than this. It's unbelievably irresponsible and incredibly arrogant. I can't see how people can't put 2 and 2 together on this and see what they are doing.

Screw GM.

Well, my focus was on America, but OK.

What about the Chinese government? The people? China, like America, artificially subsidizes the cost of gasoline. To me that's a huge problem. And the story I referenced also assumes that gas prices will eventually retreat a little - pushing consumers back towards guzzlers.

Ultimately, lots of consumers want and like SUVs, if gas prices are low. Let's face it, some people actually need and correctly use big trucks. Unfortunately, a significant percent do not and they do not care about their impact on the world - its not even on their radar. That can't be blamed on GM.

Also, GM is far from the only automaker trying sell SUVs in China. Even Chinese automakers are developing gas-guzzlers.

But, back to GM. GM is run by the people whom own it, not Lutz or Wagoner - the board of directors - whom are just like most capitalists - it's all about money.

In my opinion, that's the problem. Capitalism values money more than people, which is the problem with cheap gas. It makes people forget about the real world costs.

I don't like a lot of vehicles that GM sells, so I don't buy them. Others do, but most would not if they paid the real cost of gasoline.

I'm just pissed right now.

I know I'm way off topic but the more I read, the more I realize how screwed our world is in so many ways (cars are just a part of the problem), I am truly and utterly shocked at how no one really cares.

Honestly, I'm at a point where I can say that if there was solution to leave this planet and live somewhere else where there were no humans, I'd be the first to go.

Plastics in our oceans, plastic chemicals seeping into our waters, fertilizers polluting our water tables, CO2 destroying colonies of coral. On and on and on. And you guessed it...all tied to fossil fuels and carbon based products. Amazing isn't it. We can make spaceships but can't put 2 and 2 together on this one thing.

Excuse my ranting but it's just amazing how uncaring people are. It's a full circle isn't it. We piss in our own back yards and then wonder why we get leukemia, cancer, etc.

But back to the topic I guess. Even if prices of fuel are low, it's extremely irresponsible of companies to practically only offer wasteful products. GM knows damned well that our fuel costs are subsidized.

You are right. It is about greed. That's why I have no hope for us. At the rate we are going, I don't see how we can recover. Call me a pessimist, I say I'm a realist. I'm glad I don't have kids.

i guess that's the main difference between you and i, noz. i have kids, so i have to have hope for the future.

That's true, in that respect we are different. You need to see the world in a more hopeful way...even warped way...if not for your own sake but for the sake of your children.

Because I have no kids, I think my view is probably abit more realistic (not to criticize...just to point out when you have other responsibilities other than yourself).

But as I commented in earlier threads, people like yourself and myself are willing to change and do things that will help us.

Most people who have kids couldn't give a damn about the future....even though they talk the talk...none will change. Remember the comment I made earlier in another thread about the idiots who live in yuppie communities like La Canada? Do you think for a moment those douches care enough about their kids to give up their toys and bad habits?

You're an exception to the rule my friend. A super rare exception.

"Keep hope alive"

And, that's while I'll keep hoping that GM better figures out a way to sell desireable, efficient vehicles here in America.

I know you hate GM, but GM's failure embodies so much more than corporate failure. Unions, tariffs, currency manipulation, health care, cheap gas, etc. are significant confounding variables in this problem.

Ultimately, the US needs a very bold new energy plan - one that can envision a real path towards the end of oil. Our infrastructure is deteriorating badly and this crisis needs to become an opportunity to rebuild America towards an oil free world.

we need governments and corporations consumers and taxpayers to come together in an unprecendented way. we need a new vision and i think its coming.

for example, why does southern california plant along the freeway and waste water keeping the sides pretty when, like germany, we could be filling that space up with solar panels?

we could so easily do so much better. and in the long run all the investment will pay for itself. the apollo program was grossly expensive for its time, but the innovations developed were worth those costs thousands of times over.

i want to be part of that zeitgeist or die trying.

wow, I must say it is rare to see this kind of agression in a GM thread (LOL). Their are some interesting points made. Clearly GM has some ground to make up in appeasing the US public.

The new Volt however is a step in the right direction, even if it is one hand washing the other. I read a bit about it at http://www.chevy-volt.net and am amazed to see how far Chevy has come in their thinking. I am a Honda guy by nature, but think GM deserves a bit more credit than theya re getting here.

Give to the liberals, criminals and communist to blast a great car. Go enjoy a latte at starbucks with the LA Times.
What's good for GM is good for America, and that can't be.

I see....so decades of garbage, substandard pieces of shit were also the fault of liberals yes? Years of wasteful, large overweight SUV crap was also the fault of liberals right?

And global climate change is also a liberal plot correct?

And all of a sudden our hearts must burn for GM...

Righhhhhtttttttt....

What the hell...let's give Enron another chance too...why the hell not?
