Prius conversions: 24 miles of electricity for $20,000?
Plug-in Conversions proves electricity is expensive?There are a number of 3rd parties that will convert your Toyota Prius into a plug-in Prius. Many of these companies use lithium-ion batteries for their conversions. Others, such as Plug-in Conversions, use NiMH batteries.
For $10,000 you can add 8 miles of electric power. For 16 miles $15,000, and for 24 miles its $20,000 according to AutoWeek. However, unlike the Chevy Volt, these NiMH plug-in hybrids can only use electric-only power at speeds less than 34 mph. Still, that can mean up to 100 mpg for the first 50 miles.

I love the Prius and I would LOVE to have the plug in version. If the Volt takes too long I am thinking of taking this route.
You can order a COMPLETE PbA plug in kit from pluginsupply.com for only $6995. The trick is installing it yourself but once you are finished you can get 10 to 15 miles of EV only driving. For me, this is perfect for all my after work and weekend driving. ALSO, they have overcome the 34 mph limit and you can now stay in EV mode up to 52 mph! $6995 is a good deal, IMO.
We also need to put things into perspective.
We are comparing a relatively "new" technology implementation to a technology (ICE) that has not only evolved for the last 100 years but also hasn't seen THAT much improvement either.
So obviously when people compare the PLUG IN tech to the already widely used ICE tech, it's alot more expensive...what a shocker!
Why is the general public so retarded? (NOT you guys...I mean the general idiots). They are willing to pay top dollar for a 1080i flat screen but not for an amazing piece of technology that saves them money in the long run, is better for the environment, serves their transporation purposes, etc etc etc..
People are people's worst enemy...that's the only conclusion I can come up with.
As my brother says, people were put on this plane to get in each others' way.
even for plug-in conversions done by 3rd party companies, software glitches are very common. doing it yourself means you deal with those software glitches.considering that you lose your warranty when you do the conversion, it's nice to have a company to back you up.
still, if toyota were doing this itself, it could probably cut hat $20,000 in half immediately and even far more over time.
plus, shouldn't a $30,000 100 mpg prius be worth a few thousand in federal tax credits?
man, if the government could put together a bold energy plan to end foreign oil dependency with huge consumer credits for such vehicles, the program could easily pay for itself via foreign oil dependency security costs alone.

Ok, now onto the real issue, who in their right mind is going to pay an extra $20k to increase the MPG by 40% on a car that only caost $25k? More importantly, the one big downfall the volt and other hybrids are running up against is the fact that regular combustion engines are starting to get efficent. By the time the Volt and the next gen of hybrids rolls out, a standard civic will be able compete on milage....
I think the real trick is a universal hybrid solution. I would gladly give up 50% of my trunk space for a 20% gain in MPG and I woul happily pay 20% of the value of my car for the service.

Toyota wont do anything better than current Prius for one good reason: yes you can do 50mph electric only, and drive 15+ miles on existing ni-mh battery, but prius will be dead within one year of deep daily cycles of battery charge-discharge. They keep it 30 to 70% charged, no more and no less, in order to survive for years... What you gonna do next, smart Prius hackers??? Get a new pack of energizers ??? /// I have master degree in electronics, guys.
Well, Toyota will do better in the next generation Prius which will be more efficient and faster. Yes, Toyota must manage the sweet spot of their battery technology, but lithium will give them a lot more room with which to work, if the battery technology can made cost-effectively safe.
