Chevy Volt: The Synchronicity of Design and Energy
2 Volt battery packs undergo testingBack in February of 2006, GM product guru, Bob Lutz, tasked GM designers to come up with a design for the car of the future. 11 months later, the Chevy Volt debuted at NAIAS 2007.
40 miles of pure electricity. Unlimited range extension via conventional fuels. 0 - 60 under 9 seconds. 100 mph+ speeds. A frugally beautiful Toyota Prius, the Volt is not. Rather, the Volt is more like an electric Camaro - a uniquely American spin on hybrid cars.
But is it just vaporware?

I'm not a fan of GM, but it does seem that the Volt is going to be a real vehicle, and that's great. Still, it doesn't absolve GM of the massive number of gas-guzzling vehicles they've sold in the US over the last few decades - and even continue to do so.
Instead of so much Volt hype, I'd rather see GM start selling many more, much more fuel efficient vehicles today. How many Volts GM sells in 2011 is basically irrelevant today.
Those are good points.
Still, it takes, minimally, a few years to retool vehicle production lines, so I think the Volt is a very important vehcile.
Nonetheless, I'm also disappointed with GM's fleet fuel economy, and the fact that GM won't challenge the Prius until 2010 at the earliest. Then again, the whole industry is really pretty disappointing.
