2009 Toyota Prius: Cheaper, at least?

A little different than the 2008 model?

Next year Toyota hopes to increase Prius production by about 60 percent. Why?

Does Toyota believe rising gas prices will significantly increase demand, even as Honda launches its purportedly cheaper Prius-killer - providing even more selection for consumers interested in hybrid cars?

More and more it appears Toyota is not going to launch its Third Generation Hybrid Synergy Drive in the 2009 Prius. While the Prius pictured above includes a reshaped front end with new headlights, rear wheel disk brakes, and low profile tires, in addition to a few other minor changes according to recent reports, is that really enough to sell 60 percent more Prius hybrid cars?

Toyota HAS to have some wild card up its sleeve, such as a nice price reduction, right?

Honda's Pruis killer is still vaporware IMO. Honda should have made the new Fit a hybrid.

I simply do not understand that lack of logic these automakers have...it astounds me that certain solutions and products stare them in the face yet they are clueless, ignorant, or purposefully avoiding the solution. Because there's money involved, I think they do it on purpose.

All these manufacturers cry about how hard it is to make a hybrid, how they will lose money, etc...but look at Nissan as an example. They have no problem whatsoever pissing away tens of millions of dollars in R&D into a stupid car like a GT-R that's an absolutely useless phallic symbol...but ask them to build a hybrid...and OH NO...it's not feasible and doesn't make financial sense.

They're all the same shit these automakers. They'll do what they want to do and we have no choice in the matter.

If I truly had a choice, I'd not drive at all. Giving money to either the automakers or the oil companies is truly well earned money wasted.

Well said nozferatu, unfortunately we live in a money-driven society where automakers are at the top of the food chain, or as near as makes no difference!

Why doesn't Prius have a sunroof as an option?

As what we all know Toyota Prius is one of the first to introduce the Hybrid Cars. There's a big risk on inventing this kind of car as this one really cost a lot.

Take a look at the roof...it is designed aerodynamically for efficiency. You can't put a sunroof in a prius.

In fact Toyota could very well put a sunroof in Prius, if they weren't busy making excuses. Yes, a sunroof can be responsible for wind resistance/drag, thereby effect the fuel economy. However air conditioning is not especially efficient. Then there is the excuse that the curvature of the roof disallowing for the installation of a sunroof. Clearly people have forgotten the Citroen Deux Cheveau; it does not get more curved than that vehicle. As for the final lame excuse being the electronics necessary to roll back a sunroof. Check out the manual sunroof of the BMW 2002 series. Someone with "pull", please tell Toyota that we aren't asking for panoramic sunroofs, just a bit of breeze.

Watch the documentary "Who Killed the Electric car?" That should piss everyone off. Hybrids are a joke and we definitely can do better.

I ordered a 2008 Prius 2 months ago. I got a call from the dealer last week and was told I would be getting a 2009 model in September or October.

Yeah we can do better than hybrids for 60,000 a car or far less than 100 mile range. Sounds like a real solution. Love people whom watch a movie and become instant experts on the costs of making cars.
