ZAP to offer plug-in conversion kits

ZAP and Hybrids-Plus to partner

ZAP will soon offer a plug-in conversion system for both the Toyota Prius and the Ford Escape hybrid using a hybrid-to-plug-in hybrid conversion system developed by Hybrids-Plus that utilizes lithium batteries from A123Systems.

For the Prius the cost is $24,000 - $32,000, depending upon the amount of electric range desired. For the Escape hybrid the price is $36,000.

That is nice, but who can afford it? For 25K, I can buy a brand new Honda CNG which only uses a few quarts of oil for lubrication. A 20 thousand dollar Prius with a 25 to 32 thousand conversion that is limited to EV only speed of less than 35 mph simply makes no sense to me.

The longer I have to wait for an electric vehicle, the more I am leaning towards the Honda CNG..

Probably better for government and fleet groups...it makes sense for these groups. At least for now.

More people should learn about electric vehicles as a solution. "Zero emissions" is something that's going to be required by law one day (you know it will). Making the decision to go electric is far cheaper anyway, like 10 cents on the dollar vs. gas. (source: zapworld.com)

"Zero emissions" where are you getting that? Someone had to create the electricity. Most likely coal, oil or natural gas. All of those create the green house gases for that Zero Emission car.

Why do we add pre-car emissions to EVS, but not conventional vehicles? it's not as if oil drilling and refinement don't create extra pollution. so let's play fair, shall we.

well to wheel is one thing. auto emissions are another.
