Lutz: Volt is the future. His global warming beliefs "immaterial"

Lutz's beliefs on global warming are "immaterial"

CNBC interviewed Bob Lutz this morning at the New York Auto Show, and his statements on global warming were a focal point.

Lutz claimed his statements were taken out of context, and that his beliefs regarding global warming are similar to many astrophysicists that hypothesize that solar radiation could be a big part of today's global warming. Nonetheless, Lutz claimed his beliefs about global warming are "immaterial".

According to Lutz, the only future for GM is take the automobile out of the global warming and foreign oil dependency equation, and the only way to do that is with vehicles like the Chevy Volt.

I just hope that the rest of GM's management team (like Rick Wagoner) have a similar mindset as Lutz. I would hate for this project to be derailed because of a bone headed management decision...

With Tesla finally rolling out their raodster and with all of the other PHEV announcements over the past year, I am hopeful that I will have more options than just waiting around for GM to deliver.

I've heard Wagoner claim the same sort of thing, and I think he and Lutz do believe in the electrification of the automobile. They also believe that the electrification of the automobile is going to take at least a couple of decades. Thus, biofuels offer the best short term solution in their opinions - its also the best way to keep making gas-guzzlers in the short term. So, that debate will open for some time.

Then again, if GM shares keep tanking, maybe neither Lutz nor Wagoner will still be around to see the completion of the Volt.

Ultimately, however, the competition to develop PHEVs is hitting the boiling point, so I do believe your options are coming, regardless of GM, but it sure would be nice to see GM help push PHEV development.

So Lutz truly believes that a truly potentially devastating global environmental problem is "immaterial" but national security is?

Truly...this guy is an utter brainless twit who sees nothing beyond the lengths of his sleeves.

One might argue that it doesn't matter how the end result is obtained and what the catalyst was...but it makes a very big difference. It's a matter of future long term survival, not just short term remedies and changes.

With people like Lutz in very important positions peppered throughout the higher echelons of politics, banking, etc., nothing will change in terms of motivations for change. They will still be the selfish, egotistical reasons for change. Not only do we have to protect the environment we live it, but we also need to progress as a species...these types of people retard our progress...not progress it.

We're in big big trouble species-wise.

Thanks for that shot of optimism Noz!

Still, I think Lutz's point is relevant. His beliefs on global warming, in terms of automobile emissions, are irrelevant.

GM's survival will be dependent on vehicles like the Volt, hybrid vehicles, etc, and it really doesn't matter what Bob Lutz thinks about global warming.

I agree with you that its sad that Bob Lutz can be so obstinate to the idea of man-influenced global warming. I'd assume, perhaps incorrectly, that even scientists that believe the sun is, ultimately, causing most global warming, still hold onto the possibility that man might also be a contributing factor, just not the main factor.

Anyway, I think Bob Lutz loves making these kinds of statements just to bug people.
