Huge lift in Prius production set for 2009

60 percent increase in production in 2009

Toyota will increase production of the Toyota Prius in 2009 by 60 percent according to reports coming out of Japan. In 2007, Toyota produced some 280,000 Prius hybrid cars, and next year the automaker plans to produce 450,000 of the hybrids per year.

While the reports don't make the claim, it seems pretty obvious that Toyota is gearing up to launch the the third iteration of the Hybrid Synergy Drive, thus the increase in production.

Wow! Honda is hoping to sell 200,000 Prius killers next year. A big jump for Honda, but still less than half of Toyota's Prius production - let alone their total hybrid production. Every other automaker won't sell even 100,000 hybrids for at least a few years after 2009. Do US automakers have enough in the tank to catch up? I'm not sure, but the Chevy Volt better move like greased, fricken lightning - that's for sure.

Hopefully that means the price of the Prius will go down, or at least fuel economy will increase significantly for the same price!

Do not count on that.
Toyota will try to get
most profit from the
first THSD version in Prius II
and they should, like any other
carmaker.
They are entitled to do this.
And the do it in a more green
way.
Mind you;
People should make the choice;
Unfortunally US government
(choosen by ALL people)
thinks carmakers decide what
we are going to buy

Perhaps Toyota will delay the launch of the third generation Prius into late 2009 to sell as a 2010 model, but in order to sell 60 percent more Prius models, Toyota would have to offer a significant price reduction, especially when Toyota is going to debut several new production-ready hybrids at NAIAS. It would seem very hard to say in January 2009, 'next year we're going to sell a much better Prius', so get out there and buy 60 percent more Prii this year!' People would rather wait unless you make them a deal they can't refuse.

Or, Toyota is preparing to launch the third generation Prius in early to mid 2009.

I'll take either.

I doubt the prices will go down. Only if they offered a downgraded version. Rarely is that the case

THIS IS NOT TRUE....FOR THE UNITED STATES. TOYOTA IS LIMITING THE EXPORTATION OF THE PRIUS INTO THE US. THIS IS B/C OF THE WEAK U.S. DOLLAR. ALLOCATION OF PRIUS'S INTO OUR REGION HAS BEEN CUT BACK FROM 3,300 UNITS A MONTH TO JUST 800 IN MAY!!! AT OUR DEALERSHIP THERE IS A WAITING LIST. JUST GO TO A DEALER IN THE CENTRAL ATLANTIC REGION AND SEE. DEMAND IS UP AND SUPPLY IS DOWN. STICKER IS WHAT YOU SHOULD EXPECT TO PAY.

Dealerships in New England are facing the same problem plenty of demand but no stock. We are 8 weeks away from more of them.

As for people complaining about the price I think $23,900.00 is a great price for a car that gets 48MPG City and 45 Highway. Show me another vehicle from any manufacturer that is as proven reliable as the Prius, for the price. There is bang for your buck in a prius and the car will have paid for itself in 5 years of driving it.

My name is Neil and I live in Japan and although the brand new 2010 Prius will not be released until May the 25th in Japan, you can still order the 2010 models right now.
The dealer use slick colour brochures to do this at the moment.
I just test drove one yesterday !!
From last month, Toyota has taken orders for 60,000 cars from their dealers.
In Japan, the government will give a $3,000 rebate for the first million small and hybrid cars sold in Japan.
They are also giving an additional tax rebate of a $1,000 and I just ordered my 2010 model and the salesman pointed out there was no tax of some kind that is put on every car sold in Japan.
So altogether, I will get over $4,000 back in cash from the government once I receive my new Prius.
The factory in Japan can only make 10,000 new Prius each month and it already has orders for 60,000 so mine will not arrive until October.

Thanks,
Neil
