GM willing to lose money on the Chevy Volt
GM willing to lose billions on the Volt? The board of directors at GM is prepared to lose, minimally, hundreds of millions - maybe even billions - on the Chevy Volt.
"We won't make a dime on this car for years, and the board is OK with that," stated Bob Lutz at the New York Auto Show.
At this point, do they have a choice?

Another good question Dach....In my mind, I do not think GM has a choice in producing the Volt and I certainly hope they stick to their guns.
I know I bring up NiMH baterries a lot, but I wonder how much cheaper it would have been for GM to use these at first and then switch over to Lithium later? There would have been little or no need for research on the Panasonic EV-95 NiMH batteries that are used in the RAV 4 EV. So how much time and expense could have been averted by using about 300 pounds of these in the initial Volts?
If GM puts out a good production Volt AND markets it well with their 3 billion dollar advertising budget, I feel the car will be a huge success.
I don't know if it would have been much cheaper, but it would have been a good way to walk the walk much sooner.
I think that GM will succeed with the Volt and it will be a big success.
Still, I don't think every other automaker is deathly afraid of the Volt. Actually, I think the Volt will face stiff competition from the offerings of a number of other automakers.
Just because other automakers haven't hyped their next generation technology as much as GM doesn't mean their next generation technology isn't as hypeworthy as GM's.
We're heading into a terribly exciting time in the auto industry, unfortunately, we still have a few more years to wait before we are there, but change is coming.
I still think this car is going to be vaporware...and its only real purpose is to detract attention from the progress of other manufacturers. GM will most definitely advertise this car to hell...but it'll be false advertising at best.
