Do biohybrids justify ethanol?
More ethanol in the states?Yesterday, GM CEO Rick Wagoner called on the government to advance ethanol in the US because the "stakes" in the oil "poker game are getting higher and higher." Coincidentally (yeah right), GM announced its new lithium hybrid powertrain via the Saab BioHybrid, a new lithium hybrid optimized for biofuel.
Now, if all the biofuel was coming from something like the Coskata Project in which GM is investing - rather than corn - I could buy Wagoner's argument. However, earlier this week, the EIA already announced that cellulosic biofuels are significantly failing to meet the production standards set by the Renewable Fuel Standard. That's means even more corn, a lot more corn. That's just not acceptable.
Get the corn out, Mr. Wagoner. Get the corn out.

Ethanol and fuel cells, why can't they just go away?
I do not look for GM to abandon ethanol anytime soon since it seems every vehicle they make these days are FlexFuel.
I think GM is close to betting the farm on ethanol. Again, I don't mind projects that convert waste into energy, but corn ethanol really needs to go away.
Also, i still believe in fuel cells. However, fuel cells are not an excuse against today's hybrids nor tomorrows plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles.
Today, hybrids like the Prius make the most sense in terms of consumer expectations and costs. Tomorrow it will be hybrids, plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles and maybe a handful of fuel cell vehicles.
In the future, however, fuel cells will make electric vehicles more efficient.
