Chevy Volt only available in 5 cities to start
Who is gonna fix it?According to Larry Burns, GM's Vice President of R&D and Planning, launching the Chevy Volt by 2010 is going to be a real "challenge" according to LeftlaneNews. And, only about 10,000 Volts will be produced the first year - although I bet the final number will be less.
Yes, none of this is really new news. Rick Wagoner, Bob Lutz, Frank Weber, etc., etc., have been echoing these statements for months.
However, when the Volt does launch, it will probably only be sold in just 5 cities as dealers are trained to service these hybrid vehicles. So, while the Volt might launch in 2010, it still might be several years before it makes it to a Chevy dealer near you.

This is really bad news for me as I live in a podunk in central Ohio. Sigh. GM is gonna screw around so much that another PHEV may be available to me by then (late 2010 or early 2011).
The Saturn Vue plug-in hybrid should be available before then. Since the Vue plug-in hybrid is built off the dual mode hybrid powertrain, perhaps that will be an option - Nationwide - much sooner than the Volt. Plus, the Vue plug-in hybrid's technology is less sophisticated than the Volt.
Anyway, 35 is too much for an average middle-classer.
That 35 number is interesting.
I think I'd be more interested in a 80 mpg, non-plugin Volt for $20,000.
On the other hand, something like the Volt could influence homeowners to take the solar plunge.
More people should learn about electric vehicles as a solution. "Zero emissions" is something that's going to be required by law one day (you know it will). Making the decision to go electric is far cheaper anyway, like 10 cents on the dollar vs. gas. (source: zapworld.com)
