What? Hybrid buyers driven by gas prices?

More than a statement car?

Many hybrid critics regularly contend that the reason the Toyota Prius sells so much better than other hybrid vehicles is just because it looks different, which gives buyers the ability to make a statement.

I've always believed some buy the Prius to make a statement, such as Paris Hilton. Many others, however, buy a Prius because it's the most functional, fuel efficient hybrid available. And, new research by Edmunds indicates that hybrid interest is significantly driven by gas prices.

Yeah, I agree with you on this. I know people who have bought a Prius not because it looks good (quite hideous in my opinion :) ) or makes a statement, but because they want to save money on gas. Can't say I blame them!

There's no doubt that many Prius buyers buy a Prius to be different, to make a statement, but you can't deny the importance of Prius fuel economy - even for people making a statement.

Still, the Toyota Camry hybrid is blowing away the hybrid sales of every other hybrid on the market, except the Prius, and you can barely tell the difference between the Camry hybrid and the conventional Camry. I think that if you could bring down Camry hybrid costs a little bit more, it might outsell the Prius. Why. More conventional look and feel, but with unconventionally great fuel economy.

Besides, isn't every automotive purchase a little bit of a statement? At least a Prius statement is a bit of better statement than look how cool I am because I drive this candy-apple-red sports car.

When we ordered our Prius, we explained to our three children that it was better for the environment and therefore their future. We told them how we'd consume 600 gallons less gasoline per year than we had carting them around in the minivan. They've not complained about less space yet.
I stand by our reasoning whether talking to them or anyone else. We put our money where our future is.

Funny how easily kids grasp that kind of reasoning, KP. It gives me hope for the future. Now if we can only make it through today!

I own two hybrids, a Camry and a Highlander. Neither look like a hybrid vehicle (.... a Prius I guess) and other than some small badging you would never know. So I know I don't look any different going down the road. I do know that I get much better gas mileage and have lower emissions than most other cars on the road. We also try to consolidate our trips to reduce overall driving. Both vehicles are very well built and enjoyable to drive and very quite inside. Couldn't be happier

Inconceivable! Another hybrid driver just trying to take responsibility for the consequences of their driving upon the world.
