Volvo bringing diesel plug-in hybrid to Detroit

ReCharge Concept will take the stage at NAIAS

While there has been a lot of hype about the Chevy Volt, the Volvo ReCharge plug-in hybrid is easily as interesting.

Instead of the Volt's 40 miles of electric range, the ReCharge offers 60 miles of electric range and it can be fully charged in just 3 hours. The 1.6-liter, 4 cylinder turbocharged diesel hybrid, also like the Volt, can then use liquid fuel - diesel in this instance - to extend range.

"This plug-in hybrid car, when used as intended, should have about 66 percent lower emissions of carbon dioxide compared with the best hybrid cars available on the market today. Emissions may be even lower if most of the electricity in intended markets comes from CO - friendly sources such as biogas, hydropower and nuclear power."
