GM forms hybrid engineering team

Desires to speed up hybrid and electric vehicle development

Hybrid vehicles are the future. That sentiment has been echoing throughout the auto industry for the last year or so. Whether it's CAFE, European global warming emissions requirements, or California's EPA tailpipe waiver, the writing on the wall is clear: Automakers will have to develop significantly more fuel efficient vehicles and the hybrid powertrain will be required to achieve future success.

Thus, Robert Kruse, executive director of vehicle engineering for hybrids and electric vehicles, will lead a team of engineers to more quickly develop hybrids and vehicles like the Chevy Volt, according to the AP.

Did GM just make the internet available to upper management? Why did this not exist say in 2000???? I hope its not too little, too late because GM is such a vital part of the US economy. Now if they could figure a way to build them here, ...

"too little, too late" - Sadly, that seems a strong possibility.

Still, I think GM is fully aware of the crisis that the US auto industry is in right now, and that realization is forcing GM to do things differently. And that's a great step forward.

Thus, hopefully, they'll be able to turn this crisis into an opportunity, but it isn't going to be easy.

In terms of US production, at least regarding the Volt and the E Flex Drive, an important part of the contract between the UAW and GM included a significant amount of US production for these new technologies. Since these technologies will probably be critical to GM's survival, especially in the US, that's good news.
