Escalade: Hybrid for the NFL?
Isn't it time the NFL goes a little green?Yesterday, I poked a little fun at GM for their indecision on a hybrid vehicle Super Bowl ad. It seems that GM has a hybrid supply problem, even though they barely sell any hybrid vehicles.
Nonetheless, as I read a Forbe's article about the cars NFL players drive, I realized which hybrid ad GM should run. Turns out NFL players love the Cadillac Escalade. So, why not a Cadillac Escalade hybrid commercial during the NFL?
The NFL cares, right?

I'm not sure the Cadillac Escalade hybrid qualifies as a green vehicle. I'd rather have GM just not show any commercials during the Super Bowl. They should save their money and put some real hybrids on the road.
I think that if GM did put a commercial like that on during the super bowl it would work. I think that’s a great idea… I just would wonder how they would make it seem like it is as good, or better than any other hybrid SUV. Ok it is a Cadillac Escalade, but anyone who can even afford an Escalade better damn well be able to afford the gas for the monster. And I can’t speak for any one else, but I really don’t think that any one that is interested in this car really cares about the environment enough to buy a hybrid vehicle.
In my opinion GM made a big mistake by introducing a high end hybrid vehicle like the Escalade this early in the hybrid car area. If I was a CEO of GM I probably would have waited a few years for more hybrid products to catch on and then hit the world with this model.
Yesterday I agreed with you.
Today, after reading that Forbes article, I was reminded of something that has been bothering me for some time - the whole bling-bling thing.
Why can't green be the new bling? OK, maybe that's a bit too far-fetched.
Still, a hybrid like the Escalade hybrid is a far better choice for a pro football player than a conventional Escalade. Plus, it enables the hordes of fans to notice that these 'cultural leaders' - boy I hate saying that - are buying green technologies, which might make them ask, Why go green? Why are these players goign green?
That kind of cultural awakening could be priceless.

GM started with large hybrid SUVs because the dual mode hybrid powertrain was adapated from the same powertrain that GM uses in hybrid buses. It's taken some time and a lot of engineering to bring GM's hybrid technology down to the size of the Saturn Vue hybrid (dual mode) due out later this year.
It would probably take another couple years to scale it into a mass-produced Malibu hybrid (full hybrid), which GM seems to think is a better size for electric vehicles, or at least range-extended plug-ins, anyway.
Plus, GM's bread and butter is SUVs and trucks, something the dual mode hybrid powertrain fits into well. Still, GM's first dual mode hybrids will all cost over $50,000 - that's not affordable, so I hear and agree with your concerns.
I do disagree, however, that some people buying the Escalade hybrid don't care about the environment. Maybe the majority don't, but some do and keeping them close to their comfort-level is a great way to get them to make a change like buying a hybrid.
