Toyota reiterates plans to reduce hybrid vehicle costs
Camry hybrid at the same cost as a conventional Camry? At an alternative fuels conference yesterday, Toyota reiterated their plans to soon reduce the costs of hybrid cars to help achieve their next hybrid goal: one million hybrid vehicle sales per year.
According to reports, Toyota will use "Advancements in higher-capacity, lower-cost batteries".
Does that dispel rumors that the use of lithium in its third generation Prius has been delayed?

Nope. They havn't said how they'll get higher capacity, lower-cost batteries. I'd suspect that the emphasis is on lower-cost if they're attempting to push toward 1m hybrids a year.

Mike-
Let's say that Toyota's third generation hybrid drive is powered by NiMH batteries, rather than lithium. Let's even say there is an improvement in fuel economy - not significant, but an improvement - and the hybrid price difference is cut in half.
Would 1,000,000 hybrids per year be achievable?
Toyota's hybrid volume success will be based on how many different vehicles get hybridized and the price difference. I would say they'd easily hit the 1m mark if, in addition to the decrease in price different, Toyota had a hybrid truck and a hybrid minivan.
