Tax big oil to fund hybrids?

Senate passes $29 billion tax package

The Senate Finance Committee passed a proposal to tax big oil almost $30 billion dollars. The tax revenues will then be used to fund clean technologies, such as hybrid cars, wind power, and clean coal. Now the proposal will be added to the energy bill and go before the full Senate.

$22 billion? Sounds like pocket change for big oil considering their profits in the last few years.

Your idea would be fine if we lived in a communist or socialist country, however this is America where free markets exist. If you really want to get some help from one who is greedy look nofurther than the federal government and state governments. They take the most out of our pockets. Everyone wants to attack big oil, but if they don't make a profit how are they going to remain in business?? If Big Oil went away which is what too many people want, who do you think is going to search for and bring gasoline to market? The government? Ha! If that were to happen, I can only imagine with horror at what we would have to pay then!!! Taking from Big oil to fund or subsidize hybrids is a stupid idea. If the idiots in Washington would stop the oil companies from drilling and building new refineries we wouldn't have an energy dependence on foreign oil. Tell all the treehuggers to pack sand and we could solve this situation. Its not Big Oil that has us dependent on foreign oil but radical environmentalists and the spineless politicians who listen to them.
Liberals are NOT progressives but rather regressives, intelectual Neanderthals.

Free markets?

If markets are free why do corporations spend billions and billions of dollars trying to influence legislation that provides a competitive advantage over competitors?

Because of free markets?

If the markets were free there would be no need to try to influence such legislation. There would be no legislation because the markets are "free".

If there are restrictions on freedom, then it isn't freedom, and there are definitely restrictions on our so-called free market economy.

Also, you blame the government for taking most of the money out of the people's pockets, yet it is large corporations, such as big oil for example, which largely control the government because they are the only ones that can fund the cost of today's political campaigns.

Do some research and notice the correlation between how the politicians whom spend the most in most races almost always win the election.

Is that yet again freedom?

I think you are contradicting yourself a bit by defending big oil, yet criticizing the government.

I blame both. Yet, I blame the people even more. We're the idiots driving huge gas-guzzlers when we don't even have a family because we think we look cool.

As for a big oil tax, I'm against such a policy. I'd prefer the tax to be on gasoline. Thus, consumers pay for their consumption. The cost of gasoline, of oil dependency, costs more than the price at the pump.

Bin Laden, for example, has made it quite clear that the U.S.'s presence in Saudia Arabia to protect the oil fields from Saddam during the first Persian Gulf War was when he focused his attention on the U.S..

The only reason we went to Saudi Arabia was because of oil. How much money has been spent protecting this oil. How many lives lost?

Why should those of us reducing our consumption have to pay for the military costs of protecting the energy greed of those grossly consuming foreign oil?

Is that freedom?

Finally, "Liberals are NOT progressives but rather regressives, intelectual Neanderthals." - That's a pretty nasty statement from a Christian, isn't it?

It's also called a generalization - the root of sexism, racism, etc..

Not all liberals think the same, just as all conservatives don't think the same. Yes, many liberals are hypocrites, as are many conservatives.
