CAFE: Can Democrats put Michigan in check?

Is Nancy Pelosi's biggest problem her own party?

Do Democrats really care about global warming and foreign oil dependency? While the answer to that question seems like a resounding yes, why is it that some Democrats are the BIGGEST laggards regarding real CAFE increases and real action on global warming? Isn't that supposed to be the domain of Big Oil-influenced Republicans?

At some point Democrats might have to ask, "Are Michigan Democrats really Democrats."

John Dingell (D) of Michigan is one of the biggest forces preventing a serious increase in CAFE, even though hybrid cars demonstrate that the CAFE requirements proposed for 2020 are essentially achievable today. Yet, Dingell has ripped....(Finish: CAFE: Can Democrats put Michigan in check?)

Yet, Dingell has ripped on anyone that proposes a significant CAFE increase, including fellow Democrat Barack Obama (more).

In addition, Rep. John Conyers and Rep. Bart Stupak, both Democrats of Michigan, are two of the biggest gas-gouging legislation proponents in Washington.

Yet, ultimately, if Democrats are seriously concerned about global warming, are not high gas prices a good thing? Inevitably, high gas prices are good for reducing human-caused global warming because high prices reduce consumption of gasoline-caused global warming green house gas emissions (Read more).

Quite simply Democrats cannot play it both ways, yet some seem to be trying to do so. Thus, one must ask, are Democrats really that different than Republicans when it comes to real action on global warming and/or foreign oil dependency?

For the record, before hardcore Republicans start to gloat, Republicans must ask, what has the Republican Party done to secure National Security by limiting foreign oil dependency?

Answer: nothing.

Still, can Democrats accomplish anymore?

dahcredyns,
In my experience, the Democratic Party is more interested in the perception that they are pro-environment than in actually solving environmental problems. Having a perennial nemesis that is openly hostile to environmental issues conveniently allows them to accomplish very little and protect their own image through blame.
We have to remember that politicians are as a group little more than salespeople; the product doesn't actually have to be better, so long as the buyer thinks it is. Voters and consumers must hold all parties' feet to the fire and continually ask "What have you really accomplished?" and "What have you done for me lately?"

erd-

I don't disagree at all. I'm starting to completely believe that the best thing voters could do in 2008 is vote against every incumbent.

While some good people in Congress would be lost, I think it would be for the benefit of the greater good. A truly fresh start might actually lead to some real Congressional action.

Time to send a message to our politicians and the lobbyists holding the leashes around their necks.

Sounds crazy, but I think it just might be time to get crazy.
