Foreign Oil Dependency: THE battle in the fight against global warming?

Could the fight against foreign oil dependency actually unite the people?

Watching a National Geographic show on global warming last night, I realized that I'm becoming anti-global warming activism. Ironically, however, I believe that - minimally - man is having a significant impact on the environment. I also believe that we should be developing technologies, such as hybrid cars, that help reduce carbon footprints.

So, what's my problem? Why am I so troubled by war against global warming? Finish Foreign Oil Dependency: The battle in the fight against global warming.

----REST OF STORY----------

While many have already decided that man is causing global warming, most aren't doing much to really improve the situation. Even Al Gore isn't really doing anything to change his lifestyle. Instead Gore buys carbon credits to justify his environmentally unfriendly life - credits that a new report suggests might not be doing much to help the environment (more).

Even more interesting, what if science proves that global warming is happening, that sea levels will rise by 5 - 20 feet in the next few decades, and that global warming ISN'T caused by CO2 emissions. Instead, global warming is caused by sun cycles, or some other combination of natural forces. Or, perhaps man is simply making global warming happen slighter faster than nature.

Then, the real question is, can we stop global warming? Obviously, in order to answer that question one must know as much as possible about what is causing global warming. Is it just CO2 emissions, or is that just one chapter in the causes of global warming.

Global warming has happened in the past, and since nature typically acts very cyclically, one shouldn't be surprised if it happens again - with or without the help of humans. So, what if all the people can do is slow global warming down a few decades? That certainly doesn't solve the bigger problem of surviving global warming.

Ultimately, we should be doing as much research into global warming as possible. An Inconvenient Truth is not the truth - at least not the full truth. There still is far too much science missing. Even if an Inconvenient Truth is right about everything, except that man CAN stop global warming, then an Inconvenient Truth is horribly wrong.

We really just don't know enough about global warming.

This isn't an excuse not to act, but many will use it as an excuse. For years they will need more evidence.

Ultimately, there is a lot of doubt regarding global warming and severe inaction by even those whom believe in global warming. Hence, maybe there is a better way to fight global warming: foreign oil dependency.

Using technology to end foreign oil dependency will also fight global warming. Hybrid cars, for example, reduce an automobile's carbon emissions far more than they increase a car's fuel economy. Still, the technology in a Toyota Prius or a Ford Escape Hybrid does make today's automotive technology 20 to 30 percent more efficient. That means hybrids aren't just global warming fighters, they are foreign oil dependency fighters.

And the best of hybrid technology is yet to come if we're serious about hybrid vehicles and other lithium-based technologies.

Ultimately, the automotive industry can do much better than it is today, but they will need some serious help. Years of greed, complacency and fat Union contracts have cost the American auto industry dearly. Maybe the hybrid revolution can turn it all around.

Give some fat government contracts to U.S. automakers, right now. Make every government vehicle, for example, a hybrid vehicle or an electric vehicle. Even better, make them flex-fuel hybrids. Every one. Split that contract up amongst the Big 3. This should at least get American automakers back in the game. If that isn't enough help, then too bad.

Give consumers tax credits for buying hybrids and fund those credits w/ a gas tax - and keep the AMT out of the credit. Still, whether we fund those tax credits with a gas tax, or we simply realize that ending foreign oil dependency is a huge investment that can remove our footprint in the Middle East - it just doesn't matter.

Oh yeah, its a huge investment in reducing global warming emissions.

Besides, the world might just find out that humans aren't causing global warming, and that global warming is STILL going to happen, regardless of what humans do with CO2 emissions. Nonetheless, the kind of innovative thinking and technology that can end foreign oil dependency can also help develop solutions to survive even a worse-case global warming scenario. And if global warming can be stopped by significantly reducing CO2 emissions, then we'll be well on our way as well.

Since foreign oil dependency is something that most Americans can agree upon, wouldn't that be a better path than global warming to motivate the people, especially since both are really the same path? The fact that fighting foreign oil dependency also fights global warming shouldn't minimize the importance of ending foreign oil dependency, it should highlight the importance of a battle against foreign oil dependency.

Besides, if we don't end foreign oil dependency, Iraq might simply be the beginning of the end. The notion that leaving Iraq will make the world a safer place is seems silly. Al-Qaida and other extremists would quickly take over Iraq and its oil, join forces with other Islamic groups and cut off the flow of Persian Gulf oil to the West. Unfortunately, if we leave Iraq, we might hand such an opportunity to a well financed, battle-hardened fundamentalist army willing to commit suicide to hurt not just the U.S., but freedom anywhere and everywhere.

Ultimately, global warming has become too sensationalized and too politicized. America needs to be united, not divided. Focusing on foreign oil dependency can bring the people together, and if we can end foreign oil dependency, we'll have made significant reductions in green house gas emissions.

Until we end foreign oil dependency, America is stuck in the Middle East and Iraq.

Focus on Foreign Oil Dependency! It's a fight for all of us.
