Is leaving Iraq a solution or a distraction?While Democrats keep beating the Leave Iraq drum, they continue to do little to resolve the problem that eventually pushed America into Iraq in the first place: oil. While there isn't anything that can be done to immediately end foreign oil dependency, there are small actions that create strong messages that could result in real action. Extending Toyota's tax credits is one such action.
Besides, Toyota deserves the extension. Hybrid cars, plug-in hybrid vehicles - these vehicles wouldn't even be on the world's radar if not for Toyota. Even today, the Big 3 - led by GM - can't get off the ethanol crazy train. Fortunately, even the mainstream media are finally starting to address the truth about flex-fuel vehicles and corn-based ethanol - its a scam (See BW).

While GM claims that the solution begins with ethanol, corn-based ethanol has accomplished two basic things: increased foreign oil dependency and loopholes to violate CAFE (more). This is what GM so proudly takes so much credit for in its go green by going yellow campaign?
No wonder U.S. automakers don't want an increase in CAFE, they can't even meet today's CAFE requirements without breaking the law - I mean without using loopholes.
Great job, GM! Great job, Congress! Great job, America!
U.S. automakers are failing America. Jobs are not enough, especially when those jobs are creating products which threaten not just the economy of the U.S. via energy dependence, but the very security of the Nation. Sadly, politicians from both parties have not only protected these anti-American acting auto companies, they've enabled them. And, we the people, have not done much better.
What are we waiting for?
Inevitably, giving more tax credits to Toyota to sell hybrid vehicles puts extreme pressure on Detroit's automakers to compete at creating the kinds of technologies that end foreign oil dependency as quickly as possible. Such an action says, 'Change or else, now!'
Quite frankly, America's foreign oil dependency is now far more of an important issue than bankrupt U.S. automakers. Besides bankruptcy might be the best way for the U.S. auto industry to make much needed changes. Furthermore, if Japanese automakers care more about ending America's foreign oil dependency than U.S. automakers, maybe U.S. automakers just aren't very American anymore.
Of course American consumers and voters are the ultimate enablers. Will we ever change, or are we doomed to partisanship, complacency, ignorance and apathy as we bling, bling our way into oblivion??

Does America suck? After hearing Suzuki speak about environmental successes in Canada, I fear the answer. Jokes aside, I think we are at a delicate transition; we have a great opportunity, but face equally great risks.
"Of course American consumers and voters are the ultimate enablers." Never a truer word was written. We need to recognize that the US auto industry, the fossil fuel lobby, and the government are tangled up in many ways that are not immediately obvious. The result is that consumer decisions become increasingly important. If you buy lots of environmentally unfriendly products, you're creating lots of environmentally unfriendly lobbying dollars, which lead to environmentally unfriendly officials. Cut them off at the wallet.

I'm not sure if America sucks, but we sure try hard to suck when it comes to many issues. Where is our vision?
I too agree that we are at a delicate transition. So, why not dare to dream? Why not shoot for the moon once more? The stakes seem just as high as they did when Kennedy challenged America then.
How does this generation inspire a nation?
i wolud like to say something to Americans as an European... don't mind.. everything in your country has to be the biggest in whole world. you all drive the SUV-s, at least X5 or Q7. when you think, you think big, global.. i like America but you sholud slow down a bit. It's late and I can't write this as good as when i'm not sleepy. don't mind if this seems like Borat wrote this comment..

Obviously a Republican, let's blame the Democrats for everything. I purchased an Altima Hybrid with full tax credit. Toyota has been receiving theirs for years now. We wouldn't even have this oil problem if it wasn't for our wonderful leader who seems to have more oil on his ranch then the rest of do at the pumps. I agree that the automakers do not find this technology profitable for themselves, but come on, four months of a new congress should wipe out all of the damage of the past seven years?

God forbid I question the Democratic Party - I'm just supposed to pledge my allegiance to one political party funded by special interests - a characteristic both parties share - and do as I'm told?

Somehow those words from my article seem to go a little further than simply blaming Democrats.
Thank God there are no more tax credits for the biggest farce pulled on the American public. Hybrids suck. Just so you know, Toyota is pacifying us. Look at the ratio between hybrids and gas...Hybrids are expensive and costly to build and the car makers really do not want them.
Toyota wants them and makes money from them. Honda is seriously ramping up their production.
I think what you mean is no US automaker wants them because they have yet to learn how to make money off of fuel efficiency.
I think your ignorance is the biggest farce in this discussion.
