Big 3 Keep Begging But Give Nothing

Unlike Toyota, GM and DaimlerChrysler have not sold 1 full hybrid car in America

"The opening round of congressional hearings this year on global warming and alternative fuels showed one fact is clear: The climate for automakers on Capitol Hill is becoming increasingly unforgiving," claims the DetroitNews this morning.

Good. Can automakers blame Congress?

According to GM, the Big 3 doesn't need an increase in CAFE, they need more money - much, much more money. Yet, the Big 3 have already been given billions to produce vehicles like the EV1 and hybrid cars, yet what has America received in return?

Increased foreign oil dependency. (READ MORE)

(rest of story)

Even after 9/11 and Katrina, what was GM's big news? A redesigned line of its most fuel inefficient vehicles. America is at war because of oil and GM is spending 100's of millions of dollars marketing foreign-oil dependency-increasing gas-guzzlers?

Are you kidding me?

Toyota has sold 100,000's of hybrid vehicles GM and DaimlerChrysler have yet to sell one full hybrid vehicle. Instead the Big 3 have put flex-fuel capabilities on gas-guzzlers - that have never used E85 - to avoid CAFE penalties.

Wow! That's just great. Find a loophole to violate the law and further increase America's foreign oil dependency. Now that's American innovation - not innovation led by engineers, but by lawyers!

It's time for Congress and America to move forward, to set a path into the future that can end foreign oil dependency and put a huge dent in our global warming emissions. If that means a bankrupt automaker or two, then so be it. Unfortunately, the national security and health of 100's of millions is more important than the jobs of tens of thousands of autoworkers.

I've got to hold on to that one. That's a good quote!

Good article. I don't think we went to war because of oil, I think it was an extension of the terrorist policy and a fear of what Saddam may do in the future, but I don't think oil was the driving force. Keep them coming.

Steve-

I know we didn't go to war specifically because of oil, but still there was a cause and effect relationship to oil.

If not for foreign oil dependency we would not be in Saudi Arabia. If we were not in Saudi Arabia, we would not have pissed off Bin Laden and numerous other Islamic fundamentalists.

If not for Bin Laden, the Iraq war would not have happened - at least not yet.

So there is a strong connection between our foreign oil dependency and terrorism and Iraq, aside from the fact we're funding terrorists with our cheap oil habit.

It is obvious the American public until a drastic jump in oil prices was buying Hummers like crazy.

Any super corp like the big 3 with major year long safety testing can not change their line of cars as fast as the American public can change their mind.

Secondly Toyota and many other foreign countries are highly nationalized. Currently Mercedes is seeking 50 billion from its govt.

Toyota should be kicked the hell out of America. Their company is lead by and funded partially by their government.

The current free trade agreement allows japanese auto in our country every day of the week. In turn the market share we area allowed to have in Japan is basically nill.

so after 9/11 there was no reason to think that maybe heading down the direction of the Hummer, while completely ignoring fuel economy, might be a bad move?

to me, that's having your head buried up your ass.
