Ford Considering Plug-in Hybrid Vehicle

Ford Considers Adding a plug-in hybrid to it's selection of hybrid car technology.Yesterday, when Bill Ford was getting hammered by Ford shareholders, he announced that Ford was exploring a plug-in hybrid vehicle. Would plug-in technology have a significant effect on Ford's sales of hybrid cars, or was Ford just looking for a little positive buzz?

I don't think it can hurt Ford. Actually if they could get it in the field quicker than the Japanese automakers they definitely stand to gain some credibility with the environmentalist community. But the reality of the situation is that plug-in hybrids really depend on having massive storage capacity to gain any real advantage. Which would mean redesigning the Ford Hybrids with Lithium Ion or adding more regular batteries which costs you performance because of the weight. I think we will see a plug-in option when Toyota rolls out the new version of the Prius in a couple of years, before we will see Ford solve all the complicated problems of rolling it out in their production vehicles.
