Oil almost at $65.00, hello, hybrid
Oil nears $65.00 per barrelYes, oil might go down eventually, but the world conditions that have created the run-up in oil are not simply going to disappear.
More important, an act of terrorism could dramatically change everything and make $65.00 seem like the good times.
Yet, gas-guzzling goes on almost without question and the government absolutely refuses to address fuel efficiency, even though it has strong national security implications.
While I think conservation is a good idea, I also think that technology offers the solution.
Yes, fuel cell vehicles might some day be a reality, but the technology behind hybrid cars offers an answer today. If everyone drove a Toyota Prius hybrid, foreign oil dependency would be drastically reduced, perhaps even ended.
Still, this isn't realistic.
That is why vehicles, such as the Ford Escape hybrid and the Toyota Highlander hybrid are so important. Smaller, fuel efficient SUVs are a possibility, and if an SUV, why not a truck or minivan?
Already such vehicles can offer good improvements in fuel efficiency and air quality, but a few software upgrades and battery improvements could make the next generation of hybrid SUVs as fuel efficient as today's Prius.
Isn't that worth the investment?

I've owned SUVs (2 Jeep Cherokees), and am now happy with a Prius. I didn't have that many people to haul, just needed a "utility car" with some space inside. With the rear seats folded down, I think the Prius compares favorably to the smaller SUVs.
I tell people how funny it was to drive the Prius to Yosemite, and then park in the same parking lot as the Hummers at the base of Half-Dome. I mean clearly they didn't need those to get there ;-). They just did the same trip at a fraction of the MPG.
Not only "at a fraction of the MPG", but with almost no pollution.
And today's news says that automakers are failing to reduce CO2 emissions, instead, they are rising, and a British study indicates that vehicle emissions can cause cancer in children.
Oh yeah, and oil prices per barrel hit $66.00 this morning.
Hey, but they look cool.
Anyway, I've also told people that when the Prius back seats are folded down it offers a huge amount of transport space.
All things considered, I think the Prius is the best vehicle available.
And aren't they having environmental probelms in Yosemite due to vehicle emissions? It's great those Hummer drivers care so much about the environment.
I suppose they are just waiting for the Hummer hybrid vehicle.
Note that the Hummers are at the "base" in the "parking lot". Good thing they were able to traverse the barren, rocky, almost impassible path to Yosemite know as "paved roads."

That's not quite as good as the Hummer drivers who successfully overcome the rough terrain of the Los Angeles freeways I drive every day.
How many times would a Hummer driver have been stranded if not for the off-roading capabilities of the Hummer?
