I agree that hybrid sports cars hold great potential.
On the other hand, there isn't any reason we shouldn't demand more from the non-hybrids. There is this dumb expectation in the US that a Mustang or Corvette must be a V8. That's taken as a religious posistion, without looking at the specs.
I happened to look for figures on the Lotus Elise .. and found that it does a smoking 4.9 sec 0-60, while getting 26/38 mpg:

I think that is a good argument that the non-hybrid sports cars can do much better than they now do. So let's build hybrids, and better conventional sports cars.
I couldn't agree more that conventional technology should strive for efficiency as part of its performance equation.
The Lotus Elise, similar to hybrids, make you realize 'it' can be done better.
Nonetheless, I think hybrid sports cars offer more potential than conventional sports cars, but not until hybrid batteries better develop.
